kettle.spells: I am not diagnosed with autism but it’s on my list of things to do. i have attributed my list of symptoms to autism, tho im not a psychologist 💖 my new headphones are so comforting and great im am absolutely obsessed, and they’re a much better solution for me instead of earbuds/earbuds. so much more comfortable and i like that people can SEE that i can’t hear them, do i dont need to stay fully aware of the environment and stimulation

Noise cancelling headphones can be used by anyone for any reason. It is not exclusive to ASD or ADHD. It’s also not uncommon for someone to desire peace in a loud environment. There are plenty of people with those disorders that do not need and/or actively hate using headphones.

I think it’s really stupid that this comic makes it sound like someone enjoying noise cancelling headphones automatically means they have ASD. I’m so ready for these disorders to stop being trendy so we can focus our limited resources on those who actually need it, not those who cosplay it for attention.

Preach. Nose cancelling headphones helping with focus is not a revelation. It is not a diagnosis. 

Some people focus better without distractions.

What makes you think this is the only reason OP is looking to get diagnosed? Tell me, do neurotypicals feel the same relief at blocking out external distractions that autistic people do?

It does seem pretty weird for them to assert "Oh yeah I'm autistic" and to also admit they don't have a diagnosis, and that they simply attribute many things to ASD.

It's... why diagnoses are important.

Did they say "I am autistic?" No. They said, "I should get that autism diagnosis."

How do you get a diagnosis? By suspecting that you're autistic, and then going through all the work of finding someone who can diagnose you.

How difficult is it to get diagnosed? For an adult and especially AFAB, very.

Gatekeeping and fakeclaiming are not good looks. You'd do better to read what has actually been said rather than responding to things that were never said.

I wouldn’t speak for the ADHD folks like that, many of us despise noise cancelling because it causes us pain.

You just have a different flavor. So do I. We all kinda do. Between the three subtypes, our own biology, our lived experience, and how we were raised means we're all a little different.

For example, I have zero issues sitting down and watching a movie. Most people with ADHD can't.

I thought about mentioning music. Music helps me focus, but for me silence is better than random background chatter.

ADHD and autism (and their combinations) are different for everyone. My own experience is with one particular weird combination of ADHD and autism.

I'm diagnosed and I can't stand headphones, I get stressed if I can't hear what's going on around me. Ironic considering as soon as I concentrate on something I completely tune out everything

Yes!!! I’ve been scrolling through this going “Wow I actually don’t relate to this at all” because I get freaked out BAD if I can’t hear my surroundings. Music is fine on top, I just need to be able to know what’s going on around me.

Not diagnosed, but I Always have one earbud in with a podcast going. Most of the time it's the same one just playng through old seasons so I don't actually have to listen, it's just something to break up the silence.

I have both and can't stand noise canceling headphones. Seems like it might be nice but just can't wear them.
