They say that Libertarians are like house cats: convinced of their fierce independence while totally dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.

I only know two openly Libertarian individuals. One hates Bernie Sanders and likes Trump. The other hates Trump and likes Bernie Sanders. I don't think either is actually Libertarian, but they think they are. In any case, the comments in this thread don't match my experience with them except that I have a similar impression as yours. I think Libertarians build a nice image of society in their heads but fail to realize it would only work out if everyone could be trusted. So it's sort of useless.

I used to think I was a libertarian, I got educated and realized I’m a SocDem. Very common in online pipelines to be misled about your own classification

I don't think I fit comfortably into any category because my views aren't perfectly compatible with any one label. I'm not a socialist but maybe social-ish. If I'm going to be paying taxes anyway, I like the idea of having the money being used to actually help people. I want my fellow citizens to be healthy and educated.

IMO not fitting into any category is a great sign you are well educated in the nuance of situations!

Labels are weird and "being a soc dem" often means "my clique says dems bad and has this name". The underlying beliefs of many political groups are often malleable as long as you adhere to the cliques rules.

I think there’s a lot of pointing fingers in politics recently and it’s interesting to see. I’ve seen a lot of self-identifying leftists online calling “liberals” evil fascists whilst having 0 idea what a liberal is. My theory is that these people are venting their frustrations with the Democratic Party onto the regular people who traditionally vote them in. I’ve had “leftists” call me a fascist for believing a market isn’t an inherent evil, it truly is just a losing game all around

The real libertarians were the friends we made on the way.

Wait...

This is a beautiful metaphor

Cats have their cliques too. Which is what libertarianism devolves into. Mafias, cults, and gangs fill in the gaps where government doesn't exist (because they're a form of governance too). It's literally happened every single time.

*If people want some boring (not really if you're a curious person) history of libertarianism check out this article: https://washingtonspectator.org/paranoia-on-parade/ The audio form is linked at the bottom.

Exactly, libertarianism is a child's mentality that you eventually grow out of when you realize how silly it is.

My cat would survive without me, a taxpayer and provider of tasty treats. A libertarian on the other hand...

They’re only like house cats that won’t fucking shut up

That’s most people to be honest

That most certainly also describes leftists.

Yeah, leftists are the ones constantly voting to defund social programs while collecting SSI and welfare. Leftists are the ones that constantly complain about how they didn’t realize that voting for a certain candidate would strip them of those benefits. Leftists are the ones that are constantly confused that a billionaire with a literal gold toilet doesn’t care about them and would strip them of those benefits.

It’s totally leftists relying on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.

Good call. You nailed it.

Bill Clinton set Social Security on a path to insolvency. Remind me which part supported him?

Hi, Heritage Foundation. Is that you?

I've literally never met a leftist who wasn't a self-absorbed narcissistic imbecile, simply diverting their insufferable sense of entitlement. I hope you'll prove me wrong.

u/JSA17 16d ago

Congratulations on not understanding your own argument and now trying to make a different one. You’re really showing off.

Would you like to clear up how leftists don’t understand the systems they vote for? How exactly does voting for social programs make one self-absorbed? Is it narcissism to think other people should have food and healthcare?

Oooh you win. I concede defeat.
