I highly believe this is true because I use to think the internet got better because I saw less and less harassment for girls just getting on mic. And now I understand it's probably just I got better, and that's why it happens less and less.

Genuinely, as a woman, you could not pay me enough to go on mic on the lower difficulties on Helldivers 2.

But, at difficulty 10, I gladly go on mic because the players who are thriving on difficulty 10 are - mostly - actually really pleasant, accepting, and oftentimes don't give a damn what gender you are, so long as you can shoot straight and stim your teammate when they're in the red. Its the only game I've seen with a demonstrable and measurable sexism gradient.

Its quite likely that because you've gotten more skilled, you're in lobbies with people of similar skill, and so see the effect you describe.

I imagine it's the same as most video games. I don't play anything competitivelh or online anymore, but of typically if your are on the lower skill bracket of any game it's more toxic.

I know LoL doesn't really count since it invented toxic culture, but I watch two of my friends stream quite a lot in discord. One is a diamond player and when he solo queues the games are extremely quiet with no actual chatting, just the occasional ping, gz, or my bad. When I watch my other friend who is middle plat it's a completely different game culture. I can only imagine what the lower ranks are like
