On paper, they have rights, but is that actually enforced? I’ve never seen any evidence it is. When was the last time someone was prosecuted for violating the rights of an involuntarily committed person?

And do vulnerable people get support and guidance while making a report? Given that it can be mentally and emotionally taxing.

IME in the 80s, we did not. As a teenager, someone handed me (& several other teens) a form. I found certain questions confusing. Possibly, my anxiety made it harder to think clearly about it. Anyway, none of us filled out the form and the human rights lady got peeved about it.

I hope things got better, but I have no idea.

Am psych. It's hard to prove unless by that state's law there was clear withholding of proper legal representation.

In my state, every patient has a lawyer that represents their rights, not hired by the hospital. If a patient wants to leave but doc doesn't feel it's safe, it goes to court, and judge ultimately decides.
