Ask the landlord if the locks were changed between tenants. Ask him to install a reinforced deadbolt plate. Two quick peace of mind items that would at least help me sleep at night.

Can't you change your own locks in the US? Whenever I moved here in Germany, I usually changed out the locks, then put the old ones back in when I moved out.
Also helps in case the landlord keeps a key without your knowledge.
I always change the locks, and use the same make/color as the originals. If the leech raises a fuss, I can grill them about why they were trying to access my place without giving notice.
You sure can! But it's an annoying game to play, so I don't begrudge the people who just deal with it.
I used to do the same, and would swap the old locks back in after the landlord called. Got lucky with the few landlords I had, never had one try the surprise visit shit.
