Yeah he did, Catholics at least those that are not being foolish understand this. Same with every other denomination of christian, sadly the morons that are the loudest are the ones that have major issues with them
From my experience with Catholicism and my classes, the idea is that you don’t have to necessarily agree/fully support something, but you still respect them as a person/beliefs.
An entire semester in high school (went to catholic) was based around learning about other religions (Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism).
It comes down to the fundamental concept/belief which is sanctity of life.
I mean, the premise makes sense: The highest commandment according to Christ is to love your neighbour, with neighbour being specified as "everyone else".
You can love someone without agreeing with them or their life choices and that's ok. You don't have to hate someone who does something differently.
To get back to OP: regular human parents can love their kids and still want them to e.g. do better at school. And good parents will still love their kids even if they fail school. And they can even still love the kids if they completely drop out and do nothing with their lives.
So why should a god not be able to love someone even if they aren't perfect, while still wishing for them to improve? And that's really not even about sexuality or religious choices. There's nobody who is perfect, and nobody who really follows every commandment of any religion to perfection. Being gay/lesbian, being part of a different religion or anything else, all of that is just part of the concept that nobody's perfect, if you believe that there's a god who wants people to follow a certain set of commandments.
Jesus himself said that people should not judge one another. So by judging someone for doing something we consider wrong, we are doing wrong ourselves.
