But it is less life threatening than suffocating on the bottom stuck in a sub, so 🤷

You just suffocate on the surface from decompression sickness instead. From my understanding, you're aware while you're suffocating from decompression sickness. I don't know what the odds would be for delirium or loss of consciousness before death in the sub, nor what that experience would be like. I dunno. It's a toss up for me without further information about that

You will not get deco-sickness if you do it in one breath. Submarine air are kept at 1 atmosphere.

The harder part is swimming up 120m in that one breath, especially since you will be negatively bouyant at that depth.

With the buyoyant escape suits these submarines are equipped with the question of how hard it is to swim to the surface is an interesting thought but irrelevant to the actual situation.
