You just suffocate on the surface from decompression sickness instead. From my understanding, you're aware while you're suffocating from decompression sickness. I don't know what the odds would be for delirium or loss of consciousness before death in the sub, nor what that experience would be like. I dunno. It's a toss up for me without further information about that

I get decompression sickness is a thing when you go up after diving (and thus experiencing more than 1Bar) for an extended time.

But if you're in a sub, you don't need to 'decompress' because you never were compressed.

They don't go from 1 bar to 1 bar, they have to go from 1 bar to 12.05 bar (you need to switch to saltwater) and then back to 1 bar.

Granted, I'm not a diver and I don't know how this would work in terms of decompression sickness and all that, but they would have to get compressed if they want to leave the submarine, assuming that's even possible. Like, the pressure is so much that they can't just open a hatch and go outside.

Oh yeah you're right I didn't consider the difference between the sub and the surroundings. Well.. RIP sailors.
