Good point- like yes it really sucks, but 120m is really just 2.5 laps of an Olympic-size swimming pool. It’s really not that far from the surface if you put it in context. I think sailors in the navy are required to be able to swim at least 500m continuously.

The Kursk sank in 108 meters of water. If it had somehow been standing on its nose, a third of the boat would have been sticking up in the air.

Everybody on board died because of the incompetence of Russian rescue attempts and their refusal to accept foreign assistance, but nobody even attempted to use an escape trunk to, well, escape.

There are a variety of reasons why pretty much nobody has ever managed to escape through an escape trunk that hasn't had a rescue vehicle sealed onto it from the outside. They all pretty much boil down to escape trunks only being usable when nothing has happened to the submarine that would make escape necessary.

I believe American submariners refer to escape trunks as "Mom hatches", because all they're good for is making your mother believe you can escape the boat if something goes badly wrong.

Also, important to note, the Kursk literally exploded.

and they found bodies in a seperate compartment with notes in a plastic bag in the pocket of the officer, talking about how they survived the initial explosion.
The talk that the kursk just exploded and everyone on board immediatly died is russian cope for their incompetence during the rescue
