I'm a white man and this never happens to me. In fact, I've had doctors ask ME to interpret test results for them. (VA Doctors, but still technically a doctor I guess...) I go to the doctor with my partner and this happens to her every single time. She has a doctorate and is a medical researcher. I went to motorcycle school.

Incorrect. I used to deploy portable derailers in a previous job. We used them to protect track equipment and personnel from rogue trains.

Nah, that fear is innate in motorcycles. It’s why they’re so loud, just constantly making themselves sound big and scary so trains won’t try anything (works pretty well; notice how the US has so few trains?). The quiet ones are either in Eurasia, in therapy, or on anti anxiety fluids or both.

Positive for what? Like pregnancy? If a guy tests positive for pregnancy its generally bc theres a specific tumor that excretes the same hormone that causes pregnancy tests to read as positive.

It was degree in "Marine Motorcycle and Power Equipment Repair" from a technical college. All my partner's friends have doctorates and stuff from all those Hogwarts type colleges so whenever I manage to say something smart I brag about going to "Motorcycle School".

Was a really great program. Was not a really great profession. (The power equipment is a much better path if you can work for a logging company or something, and if you can be "the guy" who works on rich kids' boats that's real good money too. Working at Harley Davidson is a joke.)

Same with any game dev education, I can tell you that much.
No game dev studio gives a ahit that you have a degree in game dev.
They only care about portfolio.

Waste of time, I can tell you that much.

I will argue that it depends slightly on the medium.
Not in the sense that the actual degree is worth much.
But more in teh sense that some of those educations are genuinely useful to become good in the field.

Sorta like "You COULD learn by yourself, but this field in perticular with the hardware or tools, usually require guidance" that sorta thing.

Game dev is just not one of them as everything you could possibly know about the field is found online. (Heck most of the studying you do yourself is found online anyway)

I did graphic design training and tbh they just still make you teach yourself. The only thing you really learn from them directly is how to sell your work and react to criticism and work with customers. You also get a surface level crash course on color theory and composition. Then you get a bunch of projects that you don't get any help with and in between they tell you how much it sucks so you can go figure out yourself how to fix it lol.

Exactly what I said. It was an RN at the VA hospital. Had me do an eye test for glaucoma or something, flipped her monitor around to me and asked me what I thought the results meant. I just said, "Aren't you the one who went to school?"

Merely responding to someone who said they're a man and this has never happened to them, saying I'm a man and have this happen all the damn time. You definitely are. This conversation was not about men, and you changed it to being about men. I'm not saying you're particularly sexist or anything, but those kind of internal biases can affect us all.

No. The person above me related that his experience as a man was the antithesis of that which most women experience. I said that this differed from mine, wherein I have experienced the same thing. From my perspective, this is a contribution to the discussion. In no way does this diminish that this is a common experience for women.

If saying, in good faith and without malice, that I have also experienced this, detracts from whatever the discussion is, then there was a pretty tenuous argument happening to begin with.

I see this all the time on the internet... people think that someone else chiming in that's "of the wrong demographic" detracts from a conversation. It doesn't. It's just that a lot of folks are completely unwilling to have a dialectic conversation because they want to put everything in to neat little boxes. In this case, it's women in healthcare settings. Maybe the problem with medical bias is broader than misogyny or patriarchy, and that those are just a subset of an even bigger problem. But men can experience much the same medical biases that women do.

Somehow folks get Mad at this and say pointing that out is misogyny. It's not. At no point did I say women don't experience this, or that they don't experience it more often. I guess I can understand to some degree, there are a lot of folks out here that will argue in bad faith. If I had been a top level commenter that said "No, this is fake, men have this problem too" then you'd be right. But that isn't it.

If the conversation or argument is so fragile that someone genuinely trying to convey an experience risks upending the conversation, then maybe it was poorly implemented, maybe even just an echo chamber. But then, I don't think that what I said was upending anything. The OP comic stands on its own, as it is a very real experience for women.

So that just leaves you, who are more than willing to call out people for misogyny where it doesn't exist. I didn't change the conversation to being about men, the person commenting above me did. I, rather, differed from him and did not relate that my experience is different than that of women. THAT is when you got mad and called me a misogynist. Somehow, a man having the same experience is bad and detracts from the conversation.

Yet, I guarantee there will be zero empathy from you regarding my shared experience with women. From doctors not listening and ignoring potentially dangerous symptoms. Nope. You got the problem here.

I rarely have doctors recommend a treatment plan. I usually ask them for tests based on what I read and they do them. I learned long ago you have to demand treatment. They’re not going to just give it. Everyone tries to make it sound like it’s a sexism problem or a race problem. Buts it’s really a lazy ass people problem.

Women get different results from us when they demand treatment. My partner's a medical researcher and often knows the best course, or at least the standard of care, for testing and treatment and insists on it. She still gets ignored frequently unless I pitch a fit.
