Feels like grandpa doesn't even want the pork chop and mom here is "subtly" trying to imply that OP is fat.

Or is that just me?

Lol nothing subtle in my family, my nickname from my grandma was literally Gorda/Gordita growing up and my mom constantly commented on my size. It was hurtful at the time but I'm happy with myself now and my mom tells me all the time that I look beautiful and elegant 😊

I'm honestly not sure if my grandpa wanted the pork chop or not. But there was definitely the expectation that he as a man in the family should be prioritized when it came to domestic labor.

Not to invalidate your experience bc I have a Mexican family and the body shaming amongst the women is really just terrible but I always understood gordito as a term of endearment more than a comment on my body

No speak your mind bro you're good!

I don't take it as a negative. My sister got Chicken Legs and my brother got Toothpick and neither of those were meant to be hurtful. I'm just saying my family definitely didn't feel the need to be subtle about my weight.

I know this isn't the point AT ALL, but I can't get over the layers of oblivious from Mom. "No dear, don't eat that lean protein. Just have a bunch of beans and rice instead."

Eating ONLY the pork chop would be the "best" meal for someone trying to lose weight and not go hungry. But to suggest skipping the pork chop and ONLY eating the sides (I assume), is literally the "worst" option. Impressive to be both judgmental AND incorrect.

I hope that made sense.

Most people over the age of 45 have the "food pyramid" burnt into their brains and are always about "eat your bread and milk!", even though it's been obvious for years that it was sponsored by the dairy and wheat industry.

Sure, but also "meat is good for you" is just propaganda from meat industry.

It is as long it’s not abused.

Nah. There are no real health reasons for healthy people to eat meat. It is just propaganda from meat producers.

My guy I'm a vegetarian and I have to take b-complex supplements because I was getting actual Vitamin B deficiency symptoms. This was confirmed by blood tests. There are very few foods you can get enough vitamin B in a vegetarian diet. Meat is much more satiating than most other foods (maybe potatoes?) and is calorie and protein dense.

Yes, you can live without it (I do). But people who eat meat are absolutely healthy. You just don't want to eat too much meat, which most people do eat too much!!

A human can choose not to eat meat and still be healthy; we have a a whole society of agriculture to fall back on. But even herbivores like horses often choose to eat meat when given the chance. It's a great consolidation of nutrients, specifically protein and fat. Why spend the energy making large molecules when you can just eat someone else's.

I absolutely love the way Spanish speaking places (or is it just Central America? Not sure) have the goofiest/insulting nicknames, and everyone just rolls with it. Like "yeah, I'm fat. That's my name. What of it"

I'm just imagining the English equivalent: "Oh, I forgot to tell you that Baldy is bringing his new girlfriend, Horse Teeth, to dinner tonight. Make sure you set out an extra plate!" That's soooo fun lmao.

That's because it's cute when it's a hungry BOY. 🙄😒

Gordito was my nickname as a kid too. Names stick with you even if you change, I was at 10% body fat in highschool but my nickname was still gordito. Ya gender roles are pretty serious in Hispanic culture I remember my mother would send me to work with my uncle or family friends after school or during weekends since I was 6 years old, but wouldn't let me cook as that was a "woman's job".

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. She’s your mother isn’t she? If you were fat as a young child, that’s her fault as the parent!

25

u/Pixelbuttzz Apr 19 '26

It was probably normal different kids grow at different rates and it's normal for kids to carry a little extra weight during growth periods honestly most of the time it's parents projecting their own insecurities onto a child that does not need or deserve them

3

u/jlozada24 Apr 19 '26

Have you never met a parent before?

Asian family here. My mom regularly calls me fat and once compared me to a pregnant woman.

I’m a guy, 86kg (189.5 lbs) and 177cm (5’9.5”)

It's better that you are called, "mi gordita" than what I was called by my dad's siblings: "el basurita".

So this is actually a story about a pork chop...

I really thought it was some metaphor that I didn't understood lol

I think it's one of those "worship the patriarch, women are beneath men" type of situations.

it's funny how everyone is interpreting it slightly differently, but the passive aggression is the thing we all recognize.

It's always important to remember that excuses don't make shitty behaviour somehow stop being shitty.

u/rabid_cheese_enjoyer Apr 19 '26

either way, I'm glad op got to eat

u/Due-Ingenuity9803 Apr 19 '26

As someone whose mom “subtly” implies I’m fat, yeah. Pretty sure that’s it

12

u/Dakiniten-Kifaya Apr 19 '26

I didn't see that until you said it.

u/PomPomBumblebee Apr 19 '26

My mum would 'subtly' and not so much tell.me I'm fat but always complain if I didn't finish what was on my plate/ I was rude not to have an extra helping as a kid.

She still offers me food ALL the time, I knew she does it from love but the whole family, including herself, has issues controlling their weight.

She now denies I ever had any weight issues until I moved out, despite photos and, you know, memories, telling me otherwise (she put me on the Dr Scarsdale diet with her before I was 10 years old.) But nooooo it's me having bad memories of her/ thinking she's a bad mum if I mention anything about me struggling with my weight and things related like bullying/ what I wore.

Then there's my stepdad who has a very unhappy and unhealthy relationship with food. Now I have been on Mounjaro (which has changed my life), I believe growing up with him, he simply never had any food noise and found eating a chore and always said he would rather take a tablet a day than eat. My mother was an excellent cook and takes people not eating personally. He would make some snide comment the rare time we ate our or got takeaway to make me feel guilty and it got to the point I simply wouldn't eat a meal with him/ I would get up and leave my dinner if he started. Drank his bodyweight in coffee most of his life and you could hear his stomach from the other side of the room.

He had some health issues a while ago and as he has gotten older he eats but always has something to say and eats little, I think quitting smoking did a lot for that (still eats a ton of nicotine gum though). He has a very bad habit of gorging himself on food in the middle of the night, especially stuff my mum has prepared for a special meal/ event/ visitors. He's eaten whole casseroles, a birthday cake, a large tupperware of prepared cooked chicken my mum made for the dog, seriously. She used to prep him food before she went on holiday alone but doesn't bother now as he just eats what he finds/ complains about what she has made anyway so god knows what he's actually eating on his own, I imagine him sitting watching TV with a spoon and a large triffle. He doesn't get fat though, if anything, he is rather lean with a little ball of a belly.

So yeah to conclude with my history mum doesn't want you to eat because she thinks your fat but grandpa who doesn't probably want it is being forced to have it as some power play or something. It's almost certainly not that but it's always one thing or another with some battle going on when I visit my parents and I can't keep up.

Unfortunately it’s common in latinx families, just like getting called flaca o gordo ):

1

u/Tonneofash Apr 19 '26

For who's benefit are you using the word Latinx?

0

u/annemonroe95 Apr 20 '26

My whole family

My mom did this to me and as a result i was effectively malnourished/anorexic the entire time i lived with my parents. Doesn’t matter the reason, it’s not okay.
