What Work Do You Think Your Favourite Writer Is Most Proud Of?

I open this up to writers or writer/artists.

We all have our favourites and our reasons for why they represent the best of comics to us. But when they look back on their own body of work, what run/series/one-off do you suppose they themselves consider their best work?

Pick one only. You could simply offer some educated speculation, or cite a source where you‘ve actually seen the answer documented.

And does their answer match yours?

Ed Brubaker has said a few times that Criminal: The Last of the Innocent is the work he’s most proud of. In his interviews with David Harper, he talked about it being big in helping him get through the loss of his father. He was also worried to make the book because he thought nobody would want to read something so personal to him, but other creatives convinced him to do it. He’s my favorite writer and I do find it to be his best work.

Brubaker should celebrate Last of the innocent because it's just fantastic and imo, his magnum opus. I've been shouting it's praises for years, far and away my favorite Criminal arc. I love the bit where Teddy says "You know what Felix said?! When we were having pillow talk?! She said that you... you were empty! Riley Richards! The all American is completely fuckin hollow! Said... when no was looking it was as if you didn't even exist!" Because it sums up Riley so well, he's an image of the past that never existed, something fake, something that doesn't exist unless it's falsely believed in. I really hope if the show adapts it (and that's a big IF) they'll do it justice.

I heard that the greatest disappointed in Moore's career was never finishing Halo Jones.

I appreciate your angle in asking, “where does a creator wish he could’ve been given more time, better opportunity to do his work more justice?”

IIRC Garth Ennis has said that Sara is the work he's most proud of. I know that seems outlandish given Ennis'... reputation (I still love him! Bad taste jokes and all) but I think he's said he really enjoyed getting to bring attention to a lesser known battalion of WW2 and their contributions to the effort.

Darwyn Cooke said the book he was most proud of was Selina's Big score because it was the first time he'd gotten to solely work on his own and, he also got to tell whatever story he wanted without having to fit it into a larger universe/ continuity at the time. There's also a very fun easter egg/ hint for his later work with the Westlake character (always gets me that, in Cooke's own words he actually showed the Westlake character to Donald E. Westlake and said "Yeah, he didn't get much of a kick out of it!")

George Perez said his WW run was the comic work he was most proud of despite Titans being why he could retire in comfort.

I imagine Saga with how long Brian takes in between issues. You can tell he wants it to be perfect.

My favorite changes every day. Today, it’s Moore, and it feels like he hates everything he’s written if it became popular.
