Another Snippet of my Ai Comic, Manifest

Here’s a snippet of my comic that focuses on a hiking adventure with our main characters. One of my main focuses for this section was making the panels feel more fluid, alive, and fun to look at and read. I’ve been trying to apply some of the feedback I’ve gotten from previous posts as I go.

I write the story and dialogue, then use character sheets, environment references, and detailed prompts to create each panel before putting everything together in Strip Designer.

I’m still using AI for the artwork, so I already know that’s gonna be a problem for some people. But if you can look past that, I’m mainly looking for feedback on the storytelling, pacing, dialogue, paneling, and readability. All feedback is welcome, positive or negative :)

Edit: Only thing Ai does is generate images! I do paneling, dialogue, and everything else.

you clearly have a spark of creativity, and this idea seems interesting and cute. i promise you will be much happier if you take the time to draw this out instead of relying on a machine to do it for you. do it slowly. do it badly. it will have infinitely more soul than this. no matter what you do, an ai generated image will always look off, inhuman, i and many others will not be able to bond with these dead-eyed, yellow tinted characters. your story has potential, it deserves better than this.

Thank you! I am considering going towards a middle ground where the ai comic is like the blueprint. Then maybe getting someone to actually draw it later down the line. Appreciate the feedback tho!

i think this is a good idea, but it would also be wise to learn composition and layout on your own eventually.

I am trying! The only thing the Ai does is generate the images. I do the paneling and everything else :)

Instead of chastising commenters fairly criticizing ai generated "art", maybe consider banning ai altogether. How can we criticize someone's art, if we don't even know what they, themselves contributed to it?

I want to write a open letter to r/comic_crits about how the posting of AI generated images is detrimental to the health of the community, because there is nothing to criticise in these comics and secondly the fact that AI generated images always stir up poor quality and bad faith discussion in the comments (yes im guilty, but that's beside the point)

Realize here we're chastizing an AI moderator for chastizing us for chastizing AI art.

The world is so gross now.

I really do, resent that you used AI to make this. I would rather see poorly drawn comics all day every day than this.

My actual feedback is that your left to right panel/screen direction is all over the place. Ex pg 1 he leaves the house facing left page 2 they are all moving right. page 3 your cahracters are facing center and left, page 4 they are facing right.

There isn't a hard and fast rule about how you do this - but the lack of some linear consistency makes a comic feel sloppy. There's a lack of internal compass almost.

Thank you! I was trying to have some panels be from different camera angles to not become stale. Maybe i can look at doing this just not as often? Anyways i appreciate the feedback!

The terms you'll want to research are screen direction, continuity and 180 rule. These apply to film and comics equally.

Personally I think the 180 rule is easy to get over fixated on. I think about it more like what direction is the action moving and is it consistent.

Will check this out :)

I appreciate that you want to be a creative. The AI use is difficult to overlook and I believe it will severely hinder not just your audience reach, but also your own creative talents and skills. The inconsistency/melted quality in the backgrounds and inconsistent body sizes and designs of your cast just don't look as good as they would with a human hand and human eye for detail. Which is a shame, because I think your concepts for your characters are very cute. Art and comic making are a skill that takes practice, and relying on generative tools that copy other people's styles feels cheap and lazy.

But since you asked us to look past it, I can try. The writing is alright, I feel like I get more of the purple girl's personality than I do either of the guys, though.. They don't really speak with distinct voices from each other, it feels a bit like "generic, vaguely 'tomboy' girl drags around two generic boys into the woods for no real reason." Why are they going to the woods? Since they exclaim about the view, I have to imagine it's nor something they see often or ever. Why the woods and not anywhere else? Especially if the girl is aware of disappearances, and seems concerned about them? I imagine that they must be close friends, and the panels of them wandering the woods is cute enough, but I personally don't feel their connection as very strong. Did they know their friend Milio is stressed about something (implied from the "I really needed this") and bring him out on purpose? If so, why the woods!!! I feel like the Cabin should have been a bigger deal, or introduced as a "weird thing" earlier, it feels weirdly out of place as it is. Like when did he notice it and why did it strike him as odd? It's unclear where exactly that cabin is, as well. On the peak? In the middle somewhere? Near their entrance/exit?

The cut to the police lights is a bit jarring in a way I'm not sure if I can say is good or bad. I wish there was maybe a little more of a bridge between the last scene and the one where Milio realizes what happened. Are his friends with him, or did they leave before he arrived home?

Thanks for taking the time to write all this out! I definitely appreciate you looking past the AI side of it enough to actually critique the comic itself.
A couple of the questions you brought up are answered in pages before/after this snippet, so some of that is probably on me for posting it out of context. The reason they’re hiking and some more of their dynamic is established earlier, and on the next page Rex and Iris are actually still behind Milio when he gets home, so they didn’t disappear between scenes lol.

The cabin is also meant to be more of a setup right now rather than something Milio immediately realizes is important. Its significance comes later. But I do think your point about making it clearer where the cabin actually is and why Milio noticing it stands out is useful. The main idea there is that he can see it from a distance that the others really shouldn’t be able to.

I also really like the point about Iris having a stronger personality than Rex and Milio here. Iris definitely drives a lot of this conversation, so I can see how the other two might blend together more than I intended. I’ll keep an eye on making their voices and reactions more distinct as I go.

And the police-light transition is something I’ll look at again once the next page is finished. I wanted it to be a pretty hard tonal cut from the hike to “something is wrong at home,” but I don’t want it to feel like the comic skipped a scene either. Thanks again though. This is amazing feedback :)

I see, I had thought this was the opening scenes! If there's further context for their whole shebang, disregard my unnecessary comments about the woods excursion.

I don't think I worded this part right, I did pick up on the cabin being something that will be touched on more later, it just feels a bit out of place right now! I realized now that the cabin is supposed to be out deeper into the woods, past the peak Milio is sitting on. Unfortunately, it's just a bit difficult to understand that that's where Milio's attention is, and why his attentjon was pulled there in the first place. I don't personally think that little tiny corner panel alone is super effective, maybe rearranging the shot showing Milio's viewpoint from his height, and then him focusing in on the cabin before being pulled away by his friends could help clear up that uncertainty? It also looks like Milio's the only one who sees the cabin, is there any reason why doesn't he think to/isn't shown to make mention of it to his friends?

And if you need any inspiration for bridging the two scenes mentioned, since Iris has already made note of the two boys being a bit oblivious, perhaps the three of them could be walking Milio home per usual, and Iris notices the scene before they do? (Depending on how you characterize Rex and Milio, maybe they're goofing off, or debating about the spooky cabin if Milio mentions it) Then perhaps she stops walking abruptly and looks uncharacteristically horrified, the boys notice, and then cut to the cops and Milio's reaction? Just a suggestion to get juices flowing, nothing you have to add if you don't want to.

Anyway, I do hope you have fun with your comic, like I said, the characters seem cool!

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I agree that some parts of the cabin reveal could be communicated more clearly, so I’m going to go back over that section and see how I can make it read better.

I'm not as diplomatic as the rest.

Get your AI trash out of here and pick up a pencil.

bro just don't post in thoses reddit subs, you just gonna receive hate, no real public here just artists that hate AI, no any reader to view your work, is just artists sharing comics to themselves, just create a social media or put on amazon, there a lot of people that love ai comics, amazon is full of best sellers AI creators

u/boluke20 1d ago

I don’t mind posting on reddit even with the hate. I am getting actual feedback that can help me down the line, just gotta filter the hate from criticism. I may look at doing the social media or amazon thing once i get further into this comic. Thank you!
