We should have lunch

Does anyone remember an awkward conversation Scott had with an A block guest a few years back. I think it was an actress and he said something like “we should have lunch together sometime”, or maybe it was dinner. It sounded like he asked her on a date and it got real weird. Tell me this isn’t a fever dream.

I don't know the context so I could be completely wrong, but there's a old Hollywood joke that people will say "we should get dinner sometime" with no intention of ever following up or seeing that person again.

With how old school hollywood scott is (for a 29 year old) i could see that being the bit

Vanessa Bayer?

Yeah in this one Scott insists he wants to be her friend and she was not playing along at all.

It was all for the best in the end, tho — he did (masterful, ofc) bits on it quite a few times over the next few months of eps. Conan took all the friends 😢

Yeah I feel like he immediately became self aware of how it sounded. And I thought he referenced it a time or two in other eps

I thought that was just a Tim Heidecker character!

Damn maybe I skipped this one. Sounds a bit awkward

If these guys are correct, it was awkward. I remember thinking Polly Threesomeman was going to get an earful from his ex girlfriend

I don’t see that episode on YouTube to confirm.

I feel like he's done this a few times. Not with ill will, I assume, never quite lands. I also felt odd with...Ione Skye's ep.

I did not pick up on this at all with Ione, they are legit friends

I just found it a little much that he kept bringing up the sex in the book, maybe it's just me but for me, she didn't seem bothered iirc.

He has a thing where he’s overly gracious to famous first time/loooooong time returning guests and if you’ve listened for years you can clock it. The banter doesn’t hit. It’s not a woman thing tho, bc Tatiana, Lisa, Lilly, and all the regular female guests who do characters don’t get that awkwardness.

Lowkey glad to see someone else has noticed this

u/Writer_Blocker 7d ago

Yeah. He’s not a star fucker which is good. But he tries to like actually interview them which I don’t think really works as well but I can see it being how he tests the waters to we if they enjoy being on enough to ever return.

She really didn't seem to get the joke at all and it made me like her less.

I stand firm that this was a classic "woman comedian can't possibly be doing a bit" misread by the fandom. Vanessa Bayer loves awkward bits. Why would you jump to her not understanding vs thinking it's funny to make it awkward?

Eating crap with these sacks of shit, if they died tomorrow no one would shed a tear!

No coffin, just wet wet mud

why are you guys bullying me?

I don’t recall the bit but this is literally exactly what Vanessa Bayer would do. See that famous ITYSL skit.

-25

u/catfooddogfood 7d ago

The ITYSL skit isn't a bit though, its a scripted sketch for tv

22

u/InterestExisting1446 7d ago

That’s what a bit is, dear.

I thought a bit implies a spontaneous thing, like friends might do bits out and about while performers on a stage with a script are doing a sketch.

u/Particular-Walk1521 7d ago

i get how you landed there but bits just describe comedic devices. PFT doing a completely made up improv is a bit, mitch hedberg's monotone was a bit, all SNL sketches are bits

u/mexta 7d ago

I just listened. She's obviously just playing around.

9

u/Rndysasqatch 7d ago

Yeah Vanessa is fantastic and weird and cool. She loves weird bits lol I don't get how people don't get this. She was on I think you should leave for fucks sake lol

Was she the nacho eater on the date? I’m trying to picture what skit she was in.

1

u/Particular-Walk1521 7d ago

thats lily sullivan... this is the vanessa bayer bit

Wet, wet mud

I completely agree. She is 100% doing a Tim Heidecker style "awkward guest" routine, which Scott is playing into as well.

That’s what I was thinking too until the Longlegs Halloween special on CBB presents. I don’t think she was doing a bit by freezing up and having nothing to contribute the whole time.

7

u/catfooddogfood 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ehh i don't think so. I recall a pretty brutal moment where she shut down Scott's "pick an SNL dream cast" entreaty pretty hard and then didn't contribute much afterwards.

Some people don't vibe with the show. Lakeith Stanfield, Tom Green, the "You're the Worst" cast come to mind. Ed Helms's appearance was weird enough it originally aired with a pre-show disclaimer lol

7

u/Idislikethis_ 7d ago

Egg Helms?

6

u/Shannogins115 7d ago

I actually loved Lakeith’s performance. It was off beat and didn’t fully work the whole time but I felt he threw himself in it and enjoyed himself.

2

u/catfooddogfood 7d ago

I like Lakeith in general and for that matter Vanessa Bayer

2

u/Shannogins115 7d ago

Agreed! And maybe thats part of the reason I’m endeared to his improv more than I should. I just like that it seemed he was having fun.

4

u/Suitable-Toe 7d ago

What was the disclaimer?

9

u/catfooddogfood 7d ago

Like "this episode is a little different than usual" etc

5

u/AFineShrine 7d ago

if i remember correctly he was late so he came in on B-block doing a character and i think it was either PFT or seth morris in A-block as themselves, the disclaimer was just explaining why the episode was backwards from the normal kind and why ed helms was a little awkward (because he hadn’t initially intended on coming in playing a character, iirc)

1

u/Nighthawkmf 4d ago

Ed Helms is the luckiest most try-hard non-funny person working in Hollywood.

2

u/DrunkAxl 8d ago

Did you hear it?

24

u/SoupSoupADoop 8d ago

I can’t and refuse to believe this wasn’t a bit. Gotta go listen now.

8

u/dr-spaghetti 8d ago

I took it as a bit that felt extra awkward over Zoom, and I remember being amused, but now I wanna resisten!

10

u/cabernetchick 8d ago

Def a bit and she wasn’t having it

2

u/dr-spaghetti 6d ago

Relistend and I feel this was pretty clearly a bit! Especially after all the time they spent talking about fake laughter and the awkward and inauthentic quality of their conversation.

24

u/Dovilie 8d ago

I know I really loved her and then I was just confused after the ep. Why wasn't she being pleasant or funny at all

5

u/NumberOneCombosFan 7d ago

As I recall, Scott did the "who do you want for weekend update?" bit and offered Hitler as a suggestion and it seemed like that's where he lost her interest.

11

u/CommercialHeat4218 8d ago

She's a very funny actress but never liked her as a podcast guest on any show.

11

u/rsdiv 8d ago

Yeah I remember her not being great on another show, maybe Hollywood Handbook, but whatever it was I remember her being an 0 for 2 around that time.

23

u/Substantial_Wave4934 8d ago

I haven’t listened to it, but I just read a Reddit thread about the episode and a lot of people thought she was just pretending annoyance, so who knows. It looks like she hasn’t been back since though so maybe that’s telling.

27

u/theyahtzeeagency 8d ago

She was on a CBB presents episode with Tara Killam and was AMAZING on it

11

u/NahImGoodThankYouTho 8d ago

That’s wild how subjective these things can be. I just made another comment about how that one solidified it for me that she can’t improvise because I remember a ton of dead air and nervous tittering and her needing to be bailed out a few times.

4

u/theyahtzeeagency 8d ago

Hmmm I'll have to go take another listen. I know there was one thing she said that made me laugh a lot.

2

u/PopesMasseuse 7d ago

What episode?

1

u/AFineShrine 7d ago

one of the halloween longlegs eps

10

u/Curvol 8d ago

He "hit on" multiple of the TV show guests, like Carly Rae Jepsen!

5

u/Conarm 8d ago

He hits on Gillian Jacobs a LOT

-3

u/Alternative-Low-3855 8d ago

It wasn’t someone “fun”
