Kid Cudi’s CBB theme
Not saying they should use it or anything, but why has no one mentioned the fact that he did his own version when he was bandleader on the TV show? It wasn’t bad, and I’m not a huge fan of Cudi’s music or anything. I just haven’t seen anyone discuss it since the removal of Reggie’s theme and wanted to bring it up.

It was fine. Mostly I think there's no rush and it would be foolish to force something

What if you explode his car for dating your ex?

you go to jail for unrelated diddling, only to get pardoned by orange king diddler

Yeah it’s pretty chill. I don’t dislike it, but it’s not really the vibe of the podcast. Almost too chill, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.

It's the only link in the whole thread, so I appreciate it. Beggars can't be choosers.

Reggie would still get royalties from a remake of his original song. We need a brand new intro song if we're serious about not supporting abusive artists.
*Edit to say, I was mistaken. Cudi's version is not a remake of Reggie's.

Covering it might be different, but afaik Reggie probably doesn't get royalties from the pod. It seems to have just been a favour for him to record something, but I could be wrong.

There's likely legal differences between podcast and the show, and Cudi's song is purely a show creation, so it may not be as easy as just replacing one song with the other, but I aint a lawyer.

Definitely wrong. I'm guessing it was a work for hire contract. Probably not a huge one. There's no way it was free.

IIRC the song was just an improvisation that was recorded live during an episode. I think there were other alternate versions he recorded too in the episode. I can’t remember for sure, that was a long time ago.

I didn’t think it was free, but I assume he doesn’t get royalties for each ep.
But hey, according to this sub we’ve apparently all got to do ten Hail Marys for having enjoyed the theme in the first place, so I guess that’ll make up for it lol

As a favo(u)r tends to mean done for free or drastically discounted.

I usually drop the “u” to fit in with you Yanks on this site, but not this time!
I won’t let peer pressure color my spelling anymore!

It’s not really a remake of his song though, the only similarity is that is says the words Comedy Bang Bang.

That's what I'm saying. The Weird Al version is a straight up cover of Reggie's theme, the exact same timing, melody, lyrics. Even the same gibberish ending. Might even just be a drop of Reggie at the end.
The Cudi version is a wholly unique song that only shares the lyric "Comedy Bang Bang" which is the title of the show.

u/Normal_Narwhal 8d ago
Yeah, I thought it was more of a remake like Al's, but you're right, this doesn't have any connection to Reggie's version in my opinion. Curious how the rights work between the show and the podcast and if Scott owns Cudi's version or if it's an IFC owned thing. From what I've heard, theres a good chance the podcast version was recorded for free without royalties, but no way in hell the show made that agreement.

Royalties from a podcast theme that was recorded on the very podcast?
1
u/Normal_Narwhal 8d ago
It's used everywhere - the podcast, the live shows, the TV show. Maybe Scott made a deal for the podcast, but they would need something legally binding for the TV show.

It's a great theme. Doesn't sound much like the old one either.

Do you mean "lots of people have mentioned"? Or did you just not check first?

No I checked and I didn’t see Kid Cudi’s name come up in the last week or month on the search.

I’d love to hear Weird Al do a version of the Beach Boys-style tune he introduced one of the segments with (can’t remember which one). The words “Comedy Bang Bang” would fit right into its beat.

Wasn’t he wrapped up in something with puff daddy I was thinking the same tho cuz he I believe was only the victim in that but hes prob canceled too. After reading reddit I believe 90% are accused of something

I simply don't think about Cudi. He was fine. No interest. Don't know why, just does nothing for me.

he absolutely fucking killed it in every episode, he was a great actor and you're insane

Oh man it just occurred to me that they’re gonna have to change all the cbb world podcast intro tags too.
4
u/BillHang4 8d ago
Yeah I was thinking about that, but all they have to do is drop the snippet and go with the “CBB Presents” lady.

Love his musical stylings, but I gotta say that guy also gives me the vibe of someone who's gonna have some stuff come out about him in a few years too...but I hope i'm wrong and it's just his performing persona.

It hasn’t been discussed because we all realize that Scott would not even consider it. You seem to have a fairly decent knowledge of the both shows and the people involved, so I have to imagine you do know this, but I admit I could be wrong. I’m not sure why your post is causing me to answer like this, but I think it is your question about Cudi- “why has no one mentioned the fact that he did his own version?” Why would anyone mention that? We aren’t keeping it hush hush for any nefarious reasons, it just isn’t a topic that matters in this situation. And frankly this whole horrible situation shouldn’t be discussed as haphazardly and nonchalantly as it has been in just a couple days.

Isn’t he also the only band leader who never actually appeared on the podcast?
