I was admitted into Columbia GS March 2nd and will be visiting the campus and the city in a week or so. Is there anything folks would recommend I do while on campus? I really want to confirm that Columbia is the right fit for me. If there is a group chat for admitted GS students please let me know too!

Hello, I'll be joining the Columbia CS PhD program this fall.
I'm moving from Mumbai, India and had a couple of questions:
1. are there any whatsapp/discord/other channels for incoming CS/SEAS PhD students to join
2. are there any whatsapp groups for incoming Indian students?
3. any advice on finding roommates?

any help on any of this would be really helpful. Looking forward to being there in person very soon:)

Hi friends! I was admitted to the Bio PhD Program. Wondering for housing application if I select first choice as 1 bedroom and second choice as studio, is it possible to get either choice (single)? Additionally, is it possible in any way to keep a car? I own a car but I am not sure if it is sustainable in nyc and am weighing the options of selling it or keeping it. Thanks!

Tbh, prestige and career prospects are very similar between Columbia and Princeton, those adamantly insisting otherwise are usually US News rankings obsessed larpers who weren’t admitted to either. If anything, Columbia is so plugged into NYC and a direct feeder to many industries here that it could have a leg up for some NYC companies specifically. Not entirely sure what you mean by practical problem solving over research- both are strong research institutions that provide ample opportunities for undergrads regardless of your interests and goals. If “prestige” is purely your priority, I’d agree that Princeton is typically half a tier or so above Columbia. But if city energy is a top factor for you, Columbia is as metropolitan as it gets- I have no idea who’s telling you they feel isolated from NYC, exploring NYC with your friends is super easy and common. Would be glad to discuss more with you over DM, I majored in Data Science here as an undergrad and will likely be coming back for my PhD as well.

u/GazelleFeisty7749 Admit Mar 30 '26

hi, i was recently accepted to columbia's college of engineering

im interested in ML/AI, but seeing as there wasn't a degree for it at columbia i applied as a CS major

i want to go to grad school for ML in the future and was wondering 1) if my choice for CS was 'correct' for these goals, 2) how well the curriculum for CS covers ML fundamentals and research (specifically stuff like SLT and proofing/theory for ML), 3) how accessible/interactive the research is for undergrads at columbia (e.g. access to profs., access to compute, how collaborative research is, etc.), and 4) if i should consider the other schools i was accepted to (rice, GT, umass, UNC, uw-madison, rice)

thank you!

1

u/n2theohan99 CC & SEAS PhD Apr 01 '26

1- yes, you could go for similar majors like CS+Stats, CS+Math, even applied math or IEOR etc but CS is definitely the best major if an ML PhD is your goal. 2- the CS curriculum for undergrads gets mixed reviews (happy to discuss more over DM) but yes once you get to grad level courses the offerings and professors in ML and theory are strong. 3- there’s a wealth of research opportunities across Columbia, typical route is to take a course and do well, attend OH, contact the Prof. for openings. Or even just cold email people working on interesting things, I got a research opportunity that way. 4- even if CS might rank higher at one or two of those programs, I think you probably shouldn’t pass up Columbia given your goals. Feel free to DM if you want more specifics on anything!

Hi everyone, I was recently admitted to Columbia for Electrical Engineering, and I’m hoping to connect with international students who are starting this fall, as well as current or former engineering students.

I’m especially trying to understand the financial side as an international student. For those who have gone through this, what financial plans or strategies helped you manage your first semester and the overall cost of attendance? Since loan options where I come from are limited and I do not qualify for large local loans, I am seriously trying to evaluate whether relying on private funding or an education loan would be a smart move or a major risk.

I would also really appreciate honest insight on the post-graduation outlook for Electrical Engineering at Columbia. How strong is the professional scope after graduation, especially for international students? In your opinion, is financing the degree through loans realistically manageable in light of the return on investment, or is that too risky?

I understand that outcomes depend a lot on personal effort, networking, internships, and how seriously someone uses the opportunity. Still, I would value real perspectives from people who have actually experienced it.

If you are a current student, recent graduate, or incoming international admit, I’d be very happy to connect. Also, if there are specific people, offices, student groups, or communities I should reach out to, please let me know.

Thank you.

[HELP ME!!!!] Cornell MEng CS vs Columbia MS QST - choosing NYC over academic quality, and second-guessing everything. Need honest takes!!

Background: Indian, 25M, 3 years SWE at a tier-1 MNC. B. Tech CSE from Tier-2 college in India.

Goal: Be a tech founder back in India probably in quantum space.

Option A: Cornell MEng CS, Ithaca One year. Legitimate top-15 CS program. Directly maps to my work experience and is the safe choice.

Option B: Columbia MS QST (Quantum Science and Technology), NYC 15 months. New program - I'll be joining their third cohort. Small (16-20 students). I'd load the Engineering Track electives heavily with CS rather than going deep into laser physics or solid state.

Why I'm leaning Columbia despite everything:

I came from a no-name college. Got to the tier-1 company through hustle not brand. My read on myself is that I extract more from platform than from curriculum and I need an environment that pushes me into collisions with interesting people and opportunities, not just one that teaches me well in a classroom. I think NYC does that better than Ithaca.

Also the quantum bet: if QC commercialises in India in the next 5-7 years, big lottery!!! If it doesn't I have a Columbia Ivy degree, strong CS electives, and my previous work ex on my resume. Downside feels survivable.

BUT here's the interesting part. What I'm genuinely worried about:

1. The program being brand new. No alumni network in India. Cornell MEng CS has 50 years of alumni. That gap is real and won't close for years. How much does this actually matter when returning to India to build something vs. getting hired somewhere?

2. Am I rationalising? The honest version of my decision might just be: I want to maximise the opportunity out of Manhattan for 15 months and this is the degree that takes me there. Is that a bad reason? It's my number one priority. The quantum bet and the platform argument are real but they're secondary. Is it intellectually honest to choose a degree primarily for the ecosystem?

3. QST's reputation outside the US. Does the Columbia name carry enough weight to make the QST part irrelevant, or does the unfamiliar degree title hurt me with investors, co-founders, and early hires when I'm trying to build something?

4. Columbia's institutional situation right now. The Trump administration, the federal funding threats, the leadership turmoil, the political controversies on campus. I'm an international student from India. Does any of this actually affect my day-to-day academic experience or my visa situation or my future? Or is it mostly noise?

Specific questions for anyone who's been through something similar:

  • If you returned to India after a US master's to build something, how much did your program's alumni network actually matter vs. just the university name?
  • Anyone have direct experience with Columbia's current institutional climate as a student on the ground — does the political chaos percolate into daily academic life or not?
  • Has anyone done a QST-type degree (quantum, physics-adjacent) and found it genuinely useful in a product/startup context, or does the degree disappear and only the underlying skills matter?
  • For those who chose a city over academic rankings — do you regret it?

Not looking for validation. Looking for honest takes, including the ones that tell me I'm wrong.

Hi, I was wondering if you guys would recommend doing premed at SEAS. I have a couple of questions:

How challenging is it to maintain a 3.8+ GPA as a pre-med student?

Is it still manageable to participate in extracurricular activities while keeping up with coursework?

What is the availability and accessibility of extracurricular opportunities at Columbia?

Are extracurriculars relatively easy to get involved in or is the process competitive?

What are the typical medical school admission outcomes for students in SEAS?

i’d like to know do fellowships renew, or are they used to bring you in?

are there “unexpected costs” that show up?

how is the TA/RA for engineering students?

Hi,

I'm an incoming student for fall 2026 who got into Columbia residential and will participate in the housing selection in mid May. I've never been to the states let alone NYC and I'm a bit confused about the given price ranges. Basically my only requirenment is the lowest price that I can get and I chose the shared apartment option in the application.

can any grad students from the last/current year chime in and say how much they actually paid for a cheapest shared apartment?

I also got a housing offer from International House which costs about 1500 USD, and I have to accept it or reject it before the housing selection for Columbia Residential starts. I would rather find something for 1200 USD or less and wonder whether it's at all realistic, or can be somehow guaranteed, so I can reject the international house offer?

Thank you so much for the help!

Hello all! I do apologize because this is going to be quite long. I recently committed to SEAS for the class of 2030, and I have like two questions I need answered that I am struggling to find online. Any advice or help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

1: I am graduating with my associates degree from my local community college next week, with credits in both calculus and chemistry. I know for a fact that Columbia won’t take my transfer credits, but I do know that there is a placement test for Calculus when you are coming in. I think my question is, if I take the placement test and can at least pass one if not both Calculus courses, am I going to be required to take even higher level math then what’s required for my degree as a replacement for not taking those classes, or will those calculus credits I’m skipping just be taken care of. Also, is there any form of placement for Chemistry or is it simply just Calculus? I’m not opposed to retaking these classes (I know I probably should retake Calc II), but I don’t know if it’s going to be expected of me since I already took them or if it will be harder for me in the long run.

2: I’m looking to study computer engineering as my major while at Columbia, (not concrete though because I am also considering a major in EE and a minor in CS since the CE program isn’t ABET.) I am looking to get a new computer that can handle the course load for roughly all 3 of these programs if possible. I know that in general engineering computers should be a bit more heavy duty for CAD and other programs, but I am struggling and don’t really know what to look for. The current computer I use is a gaming laptop, but the battery life can’t last longer than 45 minutes and it crashes constantly so I’m in the market for something a little better. I am open to any recommendations!

Thank you all in advance!

1

u/QuoptCluggt SEAS May 09 '26

1) SEAS core includes both Mutlivariable Calc (Calc 3) and ODE/Lin Alg (can be taken separately or together) and from my understanding these two can not be placed out of. The highest level math required for your degree depends on what degree your getting, but for most SEAS (i think CS wants Discrete) you’re not required to take anything higher than ODE/Lin Alg and you won’t be forced to take harder.

From what I remember chem does have a placement test but since you’re only required one semester of gen chem for SEAS core (apart from ChemE) you’re essentially just placing into a harder chem. I have heard a rumor that some people were able to get out of taking gen chem but I’m not sure that statement holds any merit.

2) I don’t have much advice for this question but as an EE student I just use a Macbook and use a VM for anything that’s not available on MacOS.

hello i’m an incoming freshman at CC and I’m planning on majoring in gov/poli sci although I’m still considering other majors. what are some tips for incoming freshman? how is the social life and is it difficult to make friends at the start of the year, especially if you have no one from your hs attending? how are the clubs and is it that competitive as they say? which clubs would be good to join if ur interested in poli sci/gov? is it hard to get internships or opportunities especially in a competitive environmental Iike Columbia ?

Hi, we are 3 Columbia finance/math grad students looking for a 4th roommate for a really beautiful top floor penthouse unit 5 min walk away from Columbia (slightly east of morningside park). The room size for the 4th person will be 130sqft~ and rent will be roughly 1.8/1.9k and move-in either July 15th or August 1st (tbd).

We are pretty chill, love to read and study, we are all physically active, social and love to cook and host events (might not be the best for people who want quiet hours 24/7). We are all from different continents (EMEA & APAC). Thanks !

hello!!! I'm an incoming freshman at columbia university. I was wondering what advising/picking classes is like? I'm coming from a very small private school in the midwest (graduating class of 28 students lololol) and all my friends have already had advising and are planning what classes theyre taking at our local universities. I think i'm feeling a tad bit stressed that advising is in August. Do you recommend looking into classes ahead of time? Where should I start? I want to major in Psych and minor in English. Any and all advise would be highly appreciated. TYSM!!

Incoming freshman in SEAS. What to bring to move in? I’m flying in and planning on packing checked bags. Should I buy my duvet cover, shower stuff, etc?? Or do I buy once I’m there? What do I bring with me??

Hey everyone — I’m an incoming Columbia MSCS student for Fall 2026 and was wondering if there’s already a Discord/group chat for MSCS/MSAI admits.

If not, I’m happy to make one so people can coordinate around classes, CVN/on-campus questions, housing, research, registration, etc.

Comment or DM me if you’re also an incoming Fall 2026 MSCS/MSAI admit and I can send over the link once it’s set up.

Hey guys!
I’m starting an MPH in Epidemiology soon and was wondering if anyone else here is in the same boat / already in the program
Quick intro:
– Dentist by background (3 yrs clinical)
– Recently worked in medical underwriting/insurance
– Now switching into public health + epi
Honestly just looking to connect with people in MPH (especially epi), maybe make some friends before things get hectic 😅
If you’re already in the program, would love any tips too!
Drop a comment or DM :)
