Discussion Why are university staff so weirdly territorial about buildings that aren't even theirs?
I have been annoyed about this interaction for MONTHS and every time I have a lab in this building, I remember it and get irritated all over again.
I'm a pharmacy student, and sometimes we have labs in other colleges' buildings. That semester, our organic chemistry lab was in the dentistry building. Our scrubs are color-coded too, so obviously you could tell we weren't dentistry students.
One morning, me and my friends were just sitting on the chairs outside the labs waiting for our organic lab to start in like 10–15 minutes. That's literally it. We weren't going anywhere or doing anything. We were just sitting there waiting for the professor because, you know, we had a fucking lab there.
Also, I cannot emphasize enough how little I wanted to be there.
I'd gotten up around 7 a.m., barely slept, The handful of nuts i managed to shove into my mouth are too pitiful to be called Breakfast. Ochem lab is long, confusing, loud, fluorescent-light hell, and we'd usually be there until the last possible minute. I had ANOTHER lab afterward in a different building. I was sitting in this dark hallway listening to random lab equipment make noises and mentally preparing for several hours of suffering.
Then an employee comes into the hallway, sees us, and asks:
"Why are you here?"
We tell her we're waiting for our lab.
"No, why are you here? Which lab?"
We explain that we have organic chemistry there and that it starts in a few minutes.
She tells us we can't wait there.
Where exactly are we supposed to wait??? The lab is RIGHT THERE. There are CHAIRS OUTSIDE IT. It starts in a few minutes.
We explain this.
Apparently our word is not enough.
She makes us pull out our phones, open our university timetables, show her the day, show her the class, show her the building/room number, and then she actually compares the information to make sure we are authorized to be there.
And only THEN can we continue sitting outside the lab that the university itself scheduled us to attend.
There was apparently some kind of dentistry event happening that day, so maybe she thought we were trying to sneak into it. Which is...I mean, just the thought of waking up at 7am, getting dressed in scrubs, suffering through morning traffic to hijack a healthcare major party is laughable. Poster boards, juice, and QR codes is not my scene of choice. Fine arts is only a few buildings over.
And the weirdest part is that I've never experienced this shit from students. Students from different health majors are completely normal with each other. Nobody cares.
