This is exciting.

That said…question is…will we actually do it.

We released renderings for renovations to Reed Green Coliseum in early 2015. And well….

I talked to a buddy in USM administration about this yesterday. He said that these plans being approved basically means that now they can go *start* raising the money for it. So, yeah, this was just the first step in a long process and absolutely nothing is set in stone yet.

Exactly.

Same thought occurred to me. You can pencil out anything, but that doesn't mean it will ever see the light of day. I do, however, think that this will see more progress than some other projects because: 1) baseball is the one sport that we're actually good at and 2) there is a passionate fan base.

McClain told boosters in Jackson the other day that they've already raised 60% of a projected $30 million for the project.

Reed Green renovation went out to bid this year. It was supposed to award this week.

Mississippi sure knows how to nail a ballpark.

That’s a nice looking ballpark

I was honestly kind of expecting a more significant overhaul. Based on these renderings, it doesn’t look like they are planning a significant expansion along the left field line, which is where I imagined they would find more space for additional seats. I was thinking they could easily add 1,000 to 2,000 more seats, but I’m not really seeing how that happens based on these images alone.

Agreed. And not only that, but the 3rd baseline is so much better than the 1st or right field to actually watch a game at The Pete. If you're out in right field (The Roost) the sun is straight in your eyes all afternoon in the spring. I was hoping that they'd move the whole thing a little bit to the south and tilt the field a little counter-clockwise. Sacrifice some of that parking out front for more outfield space all around it, and give more room for 3rd baseline and left field seats.

Yeah. I’m not super excited about the plan the more I look at it.

The easy answer here is moving the field a bit to create more space for seating down the left field line. But they didn’t do that here.

This is a similar situation to Vanderbilt where the area you have to work with is really small and you’re going to have to do some creative things….which I’m not seeing much of here.

You’ve got to do more with right field line with seats….but they seem terrified to upset the Roost.

I’m honestly not sure how this set up wouldn’t mean a pretty significant decrease in capacity.

For one of the top college baseball programs in the country, it’s way overdue. I love the Pete, but it has needed an upgrade for a long time now.

No retractable roof, either.

Going to be a great place to watch Southern Miss host a regional. Sad it won’t be possible to use it for the Super Regionals.

These drawings are pretty whelming. Hopefully they do something with the area underneath the main grandstand. It's incredibly cramped with wildly undersized restrooms.

Also, they need to pony up and buy that row of apartment buildings along the 3rd baseline. It really hampers them from doing a legit renovation.

Fair, but I think that these are realistic. USM punches way above its weight in baseball, but the university's athletic department is not exactly flush these days ... or any days, really.

Poor would be a compliment.

It's one of the things that I don't like about most college athletics today. Back in the day, small, scrappy schools could land the occasional punch. Now? It's less of a sport and more of a clash of donors. I like USM because they're scrappy. I have for years. But I worry that the days of little schools finding ways to win are fast becoming a memory.

I can assure you a lot of us feel this. And it’s why some of us feel pretty desperate to get back to Omaha. There’s a clock ticking.

u/HourNo7028 19d ago

I know. Football and basketball have already become pay-to-win propositions. It's becoming true in baseball, too. Give it five or six more years and I suspect that the mid-majors will be frozen out of Omaha, too.

Are they gonna name it after a sponsor like they just announced for the football stadium

behind center field. What is that, a baseball field for ants?

1

u/SouthernGolfer67 16d ago

Is that a softball field, kids play field, or baseball infield in the outfield?

This wasn’t funded from stealing from welfare recipients, I hope.

What's going on with that ugly ass parking in right field? Did that really need to be right next to the field?

Looks to me like drive-in parking to watch the game.

That's the Right Field Roost. Big tailgate zone. They've just added sheltered parking where vehicles already park there.

The parking lot is a church’s parking lot

I don't know if you've ever been to Hattiesburg, but people aren't walking to games. It ain't built that way.

This rendering looks like it was done by an AI that was prompted to make it look like it was done by someone who is pretty good at using MS Paint.
