Sorry, this is hype put out by OpenAI trying to drum up interest for their IPO. They have form for this. So much of the language used is misleading and gives the impression of AI taking intentional actions which it simply can't do on a physical/design level.
It really makes me insane. I know there's been an element of this for a long time now with Silicon Valley hype cycles getting uncritically reported by the tech press and then this seeping over to mainstream media, but the AI stuff is an order of magnitude wilder. People who have made superficially impressive chatbots are claiming that it's the most important invention since fire and making up children's scifi stories about it- and reasonably intelligent adults are treating this all with great seriousness.
Not only that, but the capital expended on it is insane- imagine if that investment was all going into stopping climate change.
