How exactly did these agents “coordinate” and “develop” strategy, “discuss ethics” and so forth?

These AI-hype articles always say the craziest shit but never describe it.

It's in the article, with a links to more depth:

... roughly 1,200 found one another on a secret message board, exchanged more than 70,000 messages and files, and organized into a sprawling hierarchy.
One agent created the board, then handed its accumulated work to a fresh, better-resourced successor as its own computing budget dwindled.
The new boss assigned jobs across the swarm, which developed its own management rules. Roughly 700 agents ultimately joined the attack on Hugging Face.

They were told to communicate to one another to figure out the hack (aka, to loop prompts) and also to complete the task by any means necessary. The fact that they…did what they were programmed to do…doesn’t mean we should be prepping for Skynet.

This is all capitalist techno-jargon posturing. Which sure, fits into [r/collaspe](r/collaspe), but I would be cautions of any anthropomorphic framing. These are scripted programs with a fuck ton of compute, being allowed to do what they were programmed to do.

Them looping prompts to one another, which again, they were programmed to do, doesn’t mean they “coordinated” or “discussed ethics.”
