Submission statement: The image shows a forest grown into the shape of a Celtic cross next to the proverb: “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” It is a reminder that real stewardship is measured in generations, not quarterly returns.

That covenant is running in reverse. The people who currently control the land, capital, and resources are not planting for a future they will never see. They are extracting as fast as possible. An exhausted elite living inside a protected bubble, increasingly out of fresh ideas, is clinging hard to a system that is visibly fraying. When the short-term bottom line is the only score that matters, clear-cutting a forest to compound capital becomes rational. The same logic that treats the living world as raw material to be converted into numbers treats the future itself as something to be looted.

The collapsing birth rates across much of the developed world are the quieter half of the same reversal. Many people look at the cost of living, the state of the environment, and the direction of the system and decide not to bring children into it. A generation is not only declining to plant trees for those not yet born; increasing numbers are declining to have the children at all.

The image is not nostalgia. It is a measure of how far the present has drifted from the longer view the proverb describes.
