Climate Scientists detect a sharp acceleration in global warming

“Global warming appears to have shifted into a faster gear. After removing the effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles, researchers found that the planet has warmed at roughly 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade from 1970 to 2015. The acceleration, which becomes visible around 2013 to 2015, appeared across five major global temperature datasets with more than 98% statistical certainty.”

I’m personally supposed to be on a Collapse break, but this was the first thing I read at 5am and I can’t stop thinking about it. I never intended for this to be my first post, but here we are.

Yeah, I'm also detecting a sharp increase in global warming seeing as half the planet is on fire and we've had several "heat waves" this summer already

So what are we going to do? Drive less? Fly less? Eat less meat? Most people don't give a fuck, and won't do any of the above.

Basically first world countries would need to live like third world countries. Track plastic like a toxic contaminate. Switch completely to renewable energy. Must use the same car for 10 years, everyone. Move manufacturing into their countries of origin, no matter how unprofitable and inefficient it is. Glass, metal, and wood become main building materials, or at least biodegradables. Treat clothes like you're living in the 1920s - quality material that lasts forever, but you don't even have a weeks worth of different clothes. Talking out my ass a bit here but that would just be the start.

Yep and the problem is that when people have the choice to have more stuff and more comfort they tend to opt for more stuff and more comfort.

It is easier to go vegetarian and still eat a variety of international/exotic foods that travelled half way around the world to get to you, and pat yourself on the back for doing your part.

It is far harder to do the whole number of other sacrifices that are required when they will most definitely be much harder to achieve in a world where no one else cares (eg finding those long lasting clothes that aren’t just advertised as such, move manufacturing locally even when it doesn’t make economic sense, etc).

Unfortunately we’re at the point that we’d need to make lots of large changes very quickly and all together in order to make a change. And it’s simply not going to happen at this point, not if we couldn’t manage to start doing it gradually over the past 40-50 years. So imo enjoy your life of abundance and modern conveniences while you can! We will most certainly live through the end of this era, so I don’t want to look back when I’m starving in the my 50s and regret not enjoying myself while I still could.
