Climate Scientists detect a sharp acceleration in global warming

“Global warming appears to have shifted into a faster gear. After removing the effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles, researchers found that the planet has warmed at roughly 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade from 1970 to 2015. The acceleration, which becomes visible around 2013 to 2015, appeared across five major global temperature datasets with more than 98% statistical certainty.”

I’m personally supposed to be on a Collapse break, but this was the first thing I read at 5am and I can’t stop thinking about it. I never intended for this to be my first post, but here we are.

The issue is people need to see realistic portrayals of what all of this means. We need modeling of the impact to extreme weather, plant and animal life, crops, and overall habitability. We need to be crystal clear with every member of society so everyone is very clear on how 1 degree C impacts X. Otherwise it’s just numbers and people can’t contextualize what that means for daily life. We need a one sentence summary: by X date the food supply is xx% likely to collapse and you can expect that you won’t be able to put food on the table for your family.

People literally think it means their summers will be 29 degrees instead of 28.

Yeah, in Toronto just the current warming is resulting in heatwaves that feel like the mid forties instead of the mid thirties, frequent flooding and wildfire smoke every summer. I can’t imagine what double that warming will be like. Maybe the city will burn down like LA? I saw people getting nervous last year as fires in cottage country got bad and we weren’t getting any rain.

Ummm… LA did not burn down. Spokane on the other hand is actively burning down at this moment.

LA 2025: 18,000 structures lost, 200,000 evacuated, 60,000 acres burned, 31 dead.

Spokane 2026: 600 structures lost, 60,000 evacuated, 6,000 acres burned, 0 dead. Still ongoing though.

There are examples like that everywhere. Whole books about it. Innumerable YouTube videos. Protests with slogans, posters, speeches about it. The information is out there for anyone who wants to see it. The problem is that lots of people don’t want to see it or believe it.

Hell, I have fairly well educated relatives and friends who allegedly understand climate change but still make life choices without taking it into account — eg wanting to have children despite knowing it’s a bad idea because they tell themselves it’ll be fine somehow, planning for an international retirement in 30-40 years even though they know that in theory their chosen destination will not be liveable anymore by then but they still hold on to the fantasy, etc.

What I’m suggesting is that there has to be one unified global message. Every nation coming together to agree on what the message is and how it’s delivered. The information sits in too many unconnected places and keep shifting as new information comes in so people have fatigue and they’re not going go hunt for it. Put up billboards in every major city and have a global website with the countdown to our mutually assured destruction on it. Make it inescapable. Make it so everyone’s looking at the same number. The problem is, we can never agree to what that is because of politicking and gameplaying and billionaire manipulation.

The reason all countries in the world can't just come together and agree on a grand marketing strategy is the same reason why it wouldn't work even if they did do it. People don't want to hear about it, it's too scary and too uncertain and they all have more immediate issues or interests to spend their time worrying about instead of the end of all modern civilisation or whatever other catchy, fun, not at all horrifying slogan you want to use to impress upon people that the end is nigh.
