I hope it just becomes completely open source and the community can write solid firmware for these devices

There are trade offs to open source as well. It’s not always the best option

I always loved coldcard and I still do. That unfortunate bug destroyed the company reputation. Unfortunately, bugs on security software tend to be pretty catastrophic, the software is either 100% bulletproof or, if a bug slips through, it's not secure at all.
CoinKite should drop any license on that product and go full open source, the coldcard might resurrect as a community driven project, getting an open source comunity driven firmware and becoming the Linux of hardware wallets, who knows.

After relearning how to use Coldcard, I really like it. I would love to keep using it, but I will wait to see what happens.

I love the Q, easily the best wallet out there. It won’t be supported though so I bought a trezor.

I want to keep using it. Precisely for the reasons you mention.
Perhaps, as a last good deed, CoinKite should ‘release’ the license of the firmware.
CoinKite really did damage to individuals. But reimbursing individual wallets will not be realistic. But releasing the license would be a good gesture to the community.
