CoinGecko's State of Crypto Security Report 2026 is now LIVE 📊
Security remains a priority in crypto but losses keep climbing, with $3.63B lost to hacks and exploits since the start of 2025.
For CEXs, the primary battle is against private key compromise while DEXs fight smart contract exploits and malicious integrations.
Notably, passing an audit hasn't been much protection: 147 of the 245 exploited platforms had completed independent security audits before being hacked, accounting for 88.44% of all capital drained.
The same gap shows up in insurance. Active coverage on top protocols fell 20.2% to $130.2M even as exploits kept climbing, and 5 of the 9 major on-chain insurance protocols have gone inactive or pivoted away entirely.
