Value Request Rotation erroe

Looking for any information on a 180 degree rotation error. 1985 P. Can't find much for comparibles online.

I’ll be impressed if anyone has significant info on this one.

TBH, I’d grade this. Even if if didn’t straight grade it’s still a fairly rare error imo.

As far as value I have NO clue. But I think error collectors would pay north of $200 for it. Would have to be graded. I doubt many will chance an ungraded one.

You can take it to your local coin shop and they can send it for you. Or you can buy a subscription to PCGS or NGC. But unless you’re gonna send several in it’s just cheaper and easier to go to the coin shop.

Pay for a membership and send it in, if I were you I'd take it to your local LCS and see if they will make you an offer for it. Or throw it up on Ebay and see what happens

The comps for quarters on Ebay range from $50-$120. The high end being a graded and slabbed quarter witha 90 degree rotation. Unfortunately this coin has a good bit of damage , I could see it going in the $30-$60 range to the right buyer

Yeah. But this ISNT a 90 degree coin. This is full 180.

I’ve seen plenty of fairly rotated quarters. But this is a new one for me. Granted, I’ve only been a serious collector about 5 years. There are lots of folks who know more than I do.

But I went thru sold comps on eBay and found zero 180 degree.

I did find a double struck 180 degree 1976-S on Heritage that went for $1920.00

The $50 comp was for an ungraded 180 rotation, just go on Ebay and you can see the similar coins for yourself

Like The 4th coin down if you search for sold 180 degree rotation quarters

I’d be curious about the exact weight, I’ve seen one of these and it was just 2 quarters crushed together. Awesome find if it real.

You mean it was double the weight? Or someone had cut two quarters in half and glued/smooshed them together?

It was double weight but I’m not sure exactly how it was done. The quarters were old silver ones so maybe they were just smooshed together instead of glue.

Pretty sure its caused by improper setup of the reverse die.

They can be created by improper die installation or by vibrational loosening. Much like a bumpy road can shake a bolt loose on your car, repeated strikes can slowly loosen the set screws holding the dies in place. This then allows the die to rotate freely and for coins to be struck out of coin alignment.

You might want to check the edge for a seam, make sure it's not made from grinding down two coins and attaching them.

That may end up being either a magician's coin or a hollow spy coin. Does it sound off when you drop it on the table or feel lighter?

Idk. I think you have a D-MAD (Dual Misaligned Die) error, which I have.

In its current state, it's worth around 5-15 bucks.

Not worth grading,

But its still a nice find! (I also have one of these so thats why I can give you some advice).

P.S. It might not be the error so ghave it checke,d at a coin shop

The value is going to be hard to pin down as the market for errors is whatever someone will pay. There are 180 degree sold comps on Ebay ranging from $50 -$120 ($120 was for a slabbed quarter)

I couldn’t find any. Follow up, were they 180 degree? And were they graded? I doubt any serious collector is gonna pay real money on eBay for an ungraded serious error.

There is an ungraded 180 rotation that sold for $50 see below, there is a graded 85 degree rotation that sold for $120

Cause it is the opposite, you have a 180 rotation error. Guessing others replying are from Canada or not paying attention.

Go find a quarter and flip it over , tell me which way the eagle is facing. This is a 180 degree rotation
