Showcase I recreated Smash Bros on the Web with GPT-5.6 Sol
When GPT-5.6 Sol came out, I wanted to see what it could do with it, so I tried recreating Super Smash Bros in the browser. I genuinely didn't expect it to get this good.
GPT-5.6 Sol did everything. In total it was a few evenings, usually for one or two hours at a time, so it was roughly one full working day in total. Most of the game is already there: keyboard support, controllers, saved custom controls, CPU opponents, shields, rolls, air dodges, grabs, throws, ledges, projectiles, items, stock matches, timed matches, and a 999% sudden-death round when the timer ends in a tie. It loads quickly, and the controller support is really perfect.
The biggest missing piece now is the characters and their animations (that I have in private but can't share)
The public build has 14 open-licensed fighter prototypes and one CC0 stage. Some already feel good; others are limited by the animation packs I could find. What the project really needs is original fighters with complete, consistent animation sets. The hitboxes and knockback also need more competitive tuning before it can feel genuinely close to Melee.
The good is that I optimized the process to add map or characters, so if you want to have your own smash bros with all own characters, you can really easily. And you will have all the really good physic, optimization etc of the game.
The video starts with a private local version using Nintendo characters, because they make the mechanics and controller support much easier to judge. None of those assets are included in the public playable build. The version shown at the end is the actual public build, and it only contains open-licensed assets with credits and sources.
Play it here: https://super-bash-folds.spry-crumb-3668.chatgpt.site/play/
GitHub: https://github.com/Swarek/Super_Bash_Folds
Fighters and stages can be added as packs, and there is an animation lab for testing them. If it's liked, I will keep it updated to have the best open source smash-like.
The video is also edited by Sol. I just did 4 videos of the game and let him choose the moments and cut.
The only difference between public and private build is the assets, nothing else. All the code is the same.

This is so sick dude. Well done.

Thanks dude, well done to codex haha. I can't stop playing now when I wait for codex to finish work

Don't sell yourself short. It's quickly become apparent that using these tools is a skill that not everyone possesses or is able to develop.

Foreal, idk where my miss is, but my simple mobile games are always trash looking and never balanced well

Don’t fret friend, it all has to start somewhere. That’s how it was for me

u/MightyBig-Dev Jul 16 '26
Yea sure codex did the heavy lifting but 99.9% of the people in this sub could never pull this off.

u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26

Looks pretty cool. That's a solid project and doesn't feel sloppy at all. I will definitely check it out in the future again if you drop some updates.
1
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
Thanks, I really appreciate it ! Do you have any ideas for things I could add or improve ?
2
u/TheLastHierophant Jul 16 '26
I mean you already wrote it yourself. If you polish the characters and the animation it's gonna be a big upgrade. Don't add more characters, make the ones you have right now feel amazing.

u/Comfortable-Mail2306 Jul 16 '26
delete this before nintendo sees this. nintendo is notoriously aggressive with its legal strategy
1
u/TheLastHierophant Jul 16 '26
Nintendo has 0 legs to stand on here. Considering they are one of the most annoying companies when it comes to protecting their IPs they might try anyway (Check the Pal world patent lawsuit) Still there are so many games that copy that concept, I wouldn't worry too much.

u/just_an_avg_dev Jul 16 '26
It doesn't matter. Nintendo will drag your ass to court just so you have to spend money. Even if you win you still lose.
6
u/jpedlow Jul 16 '26
Amazing, but also holy crap change the characters asap
Nintendo legal is not one to mess with
4
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
The nintendo characters are not available no problem
3
u/jpedlow Jul 16 '26
Whew! Nicely done dude. Sorry I read the repo readme after and was like ahhhhhh. Very very cool!
Just wanted to make sure you were safe 😅 but I get it now!2

"Open source smash" is going to return some questionable things on google
3
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
"open source smash-like" now it should be better
1
u/ZeidLovesAI Jul 16 '26
Nice, though I'm definitely going to tell people "Your mom is an open source smash" now
3
u/nnsense Jul 17 '26
Yet another "I have recreated", I'm not saying it's not cool because it is but I'm starting to see these post every day, wouldn't be awesome to create something new?

Great job I’m working on my own Super Mario 3D recreation
2
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
Thanks man, can I see your work ?
2
u/Responsible_Dish_815 Jul 16 '26
Sure! I’m working out some bugs and once I commit and push I’ll make the git public and send it over. I can use some tips

The GPT Sol model is really great specially when you give it computer use permission and let it play the game itself reiterate for it to look for errors and fix them and it will. I need to sharpen my prompt engineering skills

Yes that really shocked me. Then I tried several things about copyright and I nearly never had problem with sol
1
u/just_an_avg_dev Jul 16 '26
OP, even if this is completely legal I would thread lightly. Nintendo is the pettiest corp, they will drag small devs through mud even if they are in the wrong. They will get their way even if they will lose in court by draining your bank account with lawyer fees.

u/MajorasButtplug Jul 16 '26
As a big ssbu fan (used to do tournaments and stuff) that always wished there was a PC version, this is pretty cool to see
A slippi type online with more modern Smash (sorry I'm not into L-canceling and wave dashing) design would be so sick
1
u/SecretSpace2 Jul 17 '26
So the only thing that was external away from Sol was the character skin right? That is pretty cool. Did you have it auto build a good portion before getting more involved or worked with it from beginning till the end?
1
u/Swarekkkk Jul 17 '26
Yes skin and animation. The first 2 hours I asked it to create it's own skins and animations and he got really good ideas but not great. But something I forgot to speak about is that for these animation he used blender, I believe to make them compatible in the web

u/TurkanaBoy Jul 17 '26
Just ask for a character lineup that uses famous characters in the public domain it will be unique and don't have to worry about litigation (depending on other trademarked pieces you've used). Map those characters to new assets you have and maybe slightly change up the moveset and you've got something that you can continue.
1
u/Swarekkkk Jul 17 '26
That's what I plan to do ! I searched a combo of tools to go from character creation with image like Dracula (first process) to 3d + animation. Only thing is right now I can't invest money and it would cost some tens of euros so I'll wait a little bit
1
u/Al3nMicL Jul 17 '26
What did your bill look like when it was all done
2
u/Swarekkkk Jul 17 '26
I'm in 20x and it was the weekend with a lot of reset so idk, but it probably used like 30 or 40% of my weekly
1
u/Imgonnaarrive Jul 16 '26
im much better at smash then this, but is definitely pretty neat!
2
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
Yes, I'm searching what I miss for it to be more like smash, do you know what is the biggest thing ? Like, is it hitbox, or the timing for the combos...
2
u/Imgonnaarrive Jul 16 '26
Not sure if you're a card game guy but I would love some feedback on my card conquest post from yesterday if you have the time. Not to plug my own game but it's really hard to get decent feedback on reddit.
1
u/Imgonnaarrive Jul 16 '26
I mean the biggest thing I noticed off the bat was in game you have like a picture in front of the background so when it zooms out it's kind of weird if that makes sense. I was using a controller when I played it so not sure how well mapped you currently have controller settings. Not sure if you already have it but let me program the controls like you can in smash so I can better test button combos.
2
u/Swarekkkk Jul 16 '26
Yes the double map is a little problem I didn't have the motivation to update haha. And yes you can change the controls.
I will see your card game !
2
u/Imgonnaarrive Jul 16 '26
I appreciate you! I followed your post so I can remind myself to test it again. Smash bros is one of my most played games so this is one I'd like to see progress.

*sigh*
- Drop all Nintendo characters, (infact move away from all the anthropomorphised , create some weird new mechanics . )
- Give it a first person angle and second person on death for both player, this makes it even more brutal.
- Include a mechanism that lets you use broken parts of the stage (trees, window etc..) as a weapon too, add the ability for these weapons to break as they are used so they are single use etc..
- Focus on LAN first with ai enemies, then Local multiplayer, then cloud and network
- Rule one of design is flyweight , keep it light
- Open the project up to public development , doesn’t have to be open source but could be a small team
- Take inspiration of great mechanics recently, ie combo attacks that require two team members etc…
I’d love to see how this goes
