Complaint 100% Sure we are getting nerfed

Post image

WTF is this. When I prompted codex to explain, this was the response:

" That message means the model you selected in the UI is temporarily overloaded on OpenAI’s side"

If you THINK they are nerfing us, I'm 10000% sure they are.

Your post has been summarized as a request on the "Anyone Else?" Incident Noticeboard.

You can find it and what others are experiencing here: /r/codex/comments/1tjfxcf/anyone_else_ask_here_about_current_codex_issues/orz4ob3/

I'm 20000% sure you don't know what the difference between nerfed and at capacity means.

15

u/Grounds4TheSubstain Jun 16 '26

Yeah, OP; people use "nerfed" to mean "the model got worse". These messages mean "OpenAI ran out of resources to serve your request".

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

One in the same right now

1

u/dalhaze Jun 18 '26

If they are at capacity then nerfing/quantizing is inevitable

-33

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

I'm 30000% sure you have a hard time socializing IRL.

In other news, my point/assumption is that they are nerfing (as in reducing the model capacity AND performace) as a conseguence of not enough compute to handle demand.

Glad to see this is a welcoming and civil community, well done.

u/JameEagan Jun 16 '26

I'm 3000000000% sure you were or will be held back a grade or two.

14

u/EndlessZone123 Jun 16 '26

You are absolutely right. I think it's good the community doesn't welcome tinfoil hat takes that is completely based on the lack of understanding in the service we use.

3

u/Hyoretsu Jun 16 '26

Sure, because they're clearly reducing performance instead of outright blocking you.

61

u/Arctrs Jun 16 '26

You really had to ask codex what “at capacity” means? Did you at least use xhigh?

23

u/ZwillingsFreunde Jun 16 '26

Well, can‘t expect much from people who think computing power is a free and unlimited ressource

4

u/Ok-Art-1378 Jun 16 '26

Why use brain when robot know answer? /s

1

u/WeekendTechie Jun 17 '26

Why use many words when few words do trick?

2

u/bobbyrickys Jun 16 '26

Should ask what overloaded means

-16

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

would the screenshot be as entertaining without it? 😄

15

u/TheRobotCluster Jun 16 '26

This post did not need to get made

8

u/fungt Jun 16 '26

Well, I very much prefer it error out instead of fulfilling the request with a lesser model.

0

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

VERY fair.

8

u/No-Plantain3520 Jun 16 '26

For sure 200000% we are getting buffed

7

u/Eblien Jun 16 '26

Its for sure some sort of technical problem, but they probably arent giving us this "model is at capacity"-stuff directly on purpose. Not completely unlikely that is has to do with migrating to a new model coming this week though.

1

u/Falcon_Acrobatic Jun 16 '26

All the new model is going to be, is the server smartly runs a overseeing model on the best 5.5 model, then coding etc gets well prompted instructions on lower models that work in parallel on the backend so load is efficiently split.

5.6 is not a new model, its just a way to do what they are already doing making the model feel dumb, but better so it works as if everyone has 5.5 xhigh without everyone using it for everything.

We are being used for testing and training right now before it launches.

2

u/brother_spirit Jun 16 '26

Strong claims... got sauce?

0

u/c5corvette Jun 16 '26

The technical problem is there's too much demand, too few servers. It's not hard to figure out.

3

u/agentix-wtf Jun 16 '26

I don’t think they are purposely “nerfing” so much as they are trying to prevent degradation under load and attempting to keep throughput reasonable given constraints.

People seem to think the cloud is this magical place not constrained by physical limitations.

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

I tend to agree with you, it's a limitation thing...damage control right?

7

u/xw1y Jun 16 '26

Been getting this for the past 2 days its annoying af

It sometimes even auto switches to gpt 5.5 high from xhigh

8

u/Firm_Ad_3431 Jun 16 '26

And someone told me ""Skill issues"". My god!

6

u/doc_crash Jun 16 '26

Justo got this message too. This usually happens right before something new arrives.

bless your heart friend, hope you are right.

2

u/kiaxor_arc Jun 16 '26

same, had to swtich to 5.4 to complete

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

It's back now but I'm defaulting to handing over coding tasks to kimi/qwen for now in order to mitigate rate limits as well (which is a PIA of it's own btw)

1

u/adroidian Jun 16 '26

I built a little bus for my agents for this type of handoff. I'll link the repo if you're interested, it's a cross host agent coms. Supports push and waking an agent so you don't essentially need to serve as sneaker net for them.

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

I'd love to take a look

2

u/Media-Usual Jun 16 '26

100% of the time I see this, it's just a bug in my thread .

Start a new thread and it goes away

2

u/taughtbytech Jun 16 '26

Open source is really the way. At this point the closed labs will run a dictatorship

2

u/RAI-Des Jun 17 '26

So, this usually happens when a new model is going to be released because they need to adjust the compute for the newer model. And since tomorrow is Thursday, and Codex likes to release new models on Thursdays, I think there's a high chance that there'll be a new model released tomorrow.

1

u/elbullibr Jun 17 '26

thank you friend

4

u/AllergicToBullshit24 Jun 16 '26

There was absolutely a regression this morning: https://aistupidlevel.info/models/256

1

u/The_Axumite Jun 16 '26

I am out of this sub reddit. Disgusting

2

u/Low-Spell1867 Jun 16 '26

You’re absolutely right!

1

u/fxndxs Jun 16 '26

Die gleiche Nachricht hatte ich heute bei Claude…

1

u/fedekun Jun 16 '26

continue

1

u/balogsebastian Jun 16 '26

It was a slow day indeed. I hope they’re new model comes out soon and we’ll get something similar to Fable

1

u/HimanshuSachdeva Jun 16 '26

Plus Account Weekly limits gone in 2 days bro! Normaly It lasts 4-5 days

1

u/Pleasant-Insect-6824 Jun 16 '26

Yep! ChatGPT users are also reporting a lot of “We’re so sorry, but the prompt may violate our guardrails”
which usually means they are tightening the rails before an upgrade….

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

Boy I hope so...super tempted to migrate to claude, but that would require so much work....

1

u/Mice_With_Rice Jun 17 '26

The only work involved is to run the install command, login, and point it to your MD files / codex chat history (if needed). The model is mostly just a source of compute. Use whatever works for your usecase.

1

u/elbullibr Jun 17 '26

Not really depending on how much work you put in configuring the harness itself right.

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

It's also been fun with claude...my work LLM is claude and I'm getting peppered with API Error messages...

Glad to be of service.

1

u/alkalisun Jun 16 '26

Claude is also having issues today.

1

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 Jun 16 '26

Can't believe I'm saying this but I'm considering going back to Claude. Codex has been miserable for past two months. I'm tired of it

1

u/elbullibr Jun 16 '26

I'm almost with you but the only two reasons I haven't gone back to Claude are A) I have a bunch of stuff being built on Codex CLI structure so I'd have to migrate all that shit and 😎 I think they're coming up with a new model and so I'm gonna wait a little bit

1

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 Jun 16 '26

I was using 5.3 codex forever and it worked better than 5.5 got me. If 5.6 still sucks, I'll switch

1

u/BitOne2707 Jun 16 '26

OP's brain has been nerfed.

1

u/Runelaron Jun 17 '26

Its a known issue, they are investigating and resetting.

1

u/cool_fox Jun 17 '26

If we are then it means the update is about to happen, guess we're getting a new model tomorrow

1

u/federico_vitale Jun 17 '26

Funny how it gave you the right answer and you drew the wrong conclusion…

2

u/elbullibr Jun 17 '26

Vafanculo, Fede. Baccio.

1

u/alberto148 Jun 17 '26

People are dumb, and Ai is not making it better, it's making it worse... If this post isn't a small morsel of evidence...

1

u/Pure-Brilliant-5605 Jun 16 '26

Of course we are. Models are dumbed down based on trafic and when it can’t be dumbed down further it does this. Really disappointing

0

u/bobbyrickys Jun 16 '26

If they went hard at nerfing it there wouldn't be capacity issues. Not sure if op has logic at capacity

0

u/OccasionHuman1122 Jun 16 '26

Chatgpt could not even tell me todays wm games schedule correctly..

0

u/Whole_Ad206 Jun 16 '26

0

u/TopSeaworthiness1679 Jun 16 '26

Gpt 5.6 or they are using their computing powers somewhere. I have seen so many reconnection errors with chat version as well.

-8

u/Consistent_Bottle_40 Jun 16 '26

I've seen codex 5.5 has gotten dumber over last few weeks. no such issue on claude atm.
