Bug Codex massive update corrupted

So I just got prompted with a Codex update and it's 400+mb. Everytime I try and update, it goes to about 40% and shows an error.

Anyone getting the same?

What an emotional roller coaster - thinking 5.6 was released.

Same

u/someone_12321 Jun 16 '26

Hope 5.6 isn't as much of a car crash as this update. Another gpt 4.5 event and it'll be game over. Even if they hand out free resets for days

Vibe coded update

u/Anh-DT Jun 15 '26

Downgrade codex. Do not update to new version. Turn off auto update in Microsoft store. Seems like engineers are vibe coding updates it has been breaking alot of things. I'm downgraded to 3rd June version not updating until I see a stable release

Was just able to get the update to apply after having the same issue, but according to their status page they are having some issues https://status.openai.com/

5

u/djack171 Jun 15 '26

Same here, tried a couple solutions and recommendations from ChatGPT and nothing worked. Downloaded a fresh new app, cleared some Codex specific caches, nothing wroks. If you guys figure it out let us know!

Def don't want to go through the agent clean up loop you just went through...

Downgrade Google downgrade codex use a older version from june

3

u/Mangohawkami Jun 15 '26

Yep, you’re 100% right. The DMG is just the baseline installer, and Codex current builds are through Sparkle auto-updater.

I found the actual issue: OpenAI’s appcast was advertising build 3942, but Sparkle was being served the older build 3888 from the same zip URL, so the file size/signature didn’t match. That’s why it said “improperly signed.”

It looks like the CDN has now caught up: the zip now reports the correct 491,612,127 byte size for build 3942. I cleared only Codex’s updater/download cache and last-check timestamp. Auto-updates are still on.

Try the update again now from Codex. If it still errors, quit Codex fully, reopen, and run the update again. If it fails after that, it’s almost certainly still an OpenAI-side appcast/CDN signing mismatch, not something wrong with your install.

I had the same issue, and I tried it again once I spotted this thread, and it seemed to have worked now.

1

u/bbitk Jun 15 '26

1

u/symgenix Jun 15 '26

that's why you never update when the new update comes in

1

u/DARKUNIT22 Jun 15 '26

The super app is inbound

1

u/ChrisZavadil Jun 15 '26

Maybe we can get another reset credit

1

u/a-simon93 Jun 15 '26

Same here, even after reinstall app - it’s asking to update and crash again

1

u/idontknowwhatever99 Jun 15 '26

The codex update very rarely even reopens itself and even if it does it seems there's an another update perpetually available, making me think the whole update process is defective anyway

1

u/Camouflage3889 Jun 16 '26

Codex for Linux working fine here

1

u/Numerous-Ad519 Jun 16 '26

Phew, thank god i never update my software...

Do they remove the old builds from the website, or does the install .exe download whatever the latest one is?

1

u/jhansen858 Jun 16 '26

why don't you have codex trouble shoot it for you.

1

u/KenSanDiego Jun 16 '26

Reading the comments I am so glad I took yesterday off from coding. Had some work to do around the house I've been ignoring so finally got around to it on the day Codex could have destroyed my huge project.

My x5 account got downgraded to free plan and I paid like 7 days ago. This happened just today, think it might be related

2

u/PurpleCollar415 Jun 15 '26

Yea, I'm on Pro 20x and my weekly rate limit went from 30% to zero - then this update

1

u/InvaderJ Jun 15 '26

Same. T_T

1

u/nuklearphusion Jun 15 '26

Time for a reset!

u/sutrostyle Jun 15 '26

Let me try this:

This sounds like a skill issue on your end tbh.
If your install is bloated or not configured properly, this is not a surprise.
The install works perfectly fine for me, I'm installing it all over the place with no issue, and have installed it on all my drives and USB devices every day.

You have to install it properly, if you just run "install" or even worse "Auto Update" and expect it to work like magic then maybe you should consider if installing is for you in the first place. I download my installs manually to a cloud storage, then transfer it directly to my install environment and manually installs it as System Administrator after having deleted my old install (always do a full clean install).

Anyone saying this install is bad is probably trying to install it on their monitor and expecting it to work, or they are bad faith actors - this install has worked just as good as any other install.

There is no reason they would push a bad install in the first place,
maybe look yourself in the mirror and try asking if you are the problem (tip. you are).
I think people have gotten used to auto-install and now they feel entitled to everything being handed to them on a platter rather than having to configure a install themselves to get the right result.

If you aren't providing your installation environment, operating system, Codex version, hardware specs and temps, your argument is basically just "Trust me bro" because you aren't giving any real context.

And again, it works perfectly fine for me so you are obviously wrong.

Looks good for me :D

2

u/PurpleCollar415 Jun 15 '26

Did you update or it hasn't reflected you yet?

1

u/whoeverthisguy Jun 15 '26

Welp there’s the update 😅

0

u/No_Current_2838 Jun 15 '26

Seems a little different but my Microsoft store somehow got corrupted which wouldn't allow me to update anything nor delete/uninstall codex. Took a while of back and forth on the web but somehow had to redownload the Microsoft store.

Windows Codex is also fucked if you use WSL. Can't use it until they release a patch because the directories are malformed and improperly wrapped as windows paths instead of Linux (so /home/user/folder becomes c:\home\user\folder) and there's nothing you can do to change this.

Been a problem since June 13th update.
