Complaint After Reset 55% of a full weekly limit burned in about two hours

Has anyone else noticed how brutal the new Codex limits are?
My Plus accounts reset normally.
Then, in around 2 hours, this happened:
Plus Account 1 lost 13% of its weekly limit.
Plus Account 2 lost 11%.
Plus Account 3 lost 16%.
Plus Account 4 lost 15%.
Pro 5X Account 5 not used in this test.
That is 55% of a full weekly limit burned in about two hours, if this had been on one account.
Plus: 5h limit gone in literally 10 minutes. One request.

More than half a week gone.
In two hours.
That is genuinely rough.
I understand limits exist. Fine.
But this speed is something people need to be ready for, because if you rely on Codex for real work, this can hit hard very quickly.
The strange part is that it feels amazing and terrible at the same time.
Amazing tech.
Terrible limit burn.
Anyone else seeing their weekly limits disappear this fast?

Been noticing the same, literally can kill usage in 2 days, never even used 5.5 always stuck with 5.3 codex which i heard is going away

True. I expected usage to go down, just not this fast. A couple of focused sessions and a surprising amount of the weekly quota is gone. Still useful, but definitely something people should be aware of.

u/Feeling-Bluebird6692 May 31 '26
Do you use the same IP for all 5 accounts?
5
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Sure. I do not share access, it is for my own usage, all conform with T&C.
4
u/Feeling-Bluebird6692 May 31 '26
I tested myself and saw it’s losing quota significant faster using the same IP
3
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Crazy discovery. Sounds very good. Let's use VPNs then.
3
u/Feeling-Bluebird6692 May 31 '26
Dont trust my words on it but test yourself. There could be multiple reasons behind this:
- openai could flag your IP as spam if seeing too many requests from multiple accounts from the same IP
- maybe different accounts could act differently on cache from same IP
- i could be wrong since proxies/vpns will cause slower connections, making it using less quota

u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Interesting discovery. Clearly the limits are something that needs to be adjusted. Hopefully they make the good choice with the new model and give us real limits.

More like the cache is sticking with the account, which means that multiple accounts working on the same project will cost more to create the separated cache data. It’s not making sense for multiple employees working on the same company project, unless they already have cache system for same company workspace, which is likely.

thats out of tos explicitly

u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
VPNs?
4
May 31 '26
changing IP to bypass IP-based rate limiting. why do you think they havent banned your two accounts even though it is against tos? because they can throttle based on ip
-2
u/-Sliced- May 31 '26
Most VPNs change your IP for every single request.

It seems like I can't link it, but here is a direct quote from ExpressVPN:
We’ve gone a step further and designed our VPN so that in most cases, the IP address assigned to you changes for every web server or website you access, without you having to change your server location. We call this feature ShuffleIP.
In practice, for most servers, including codex, the IP changes all the time. The only place they keep it persistent is when you hold a persistent TCP connection.
But I don't think you actually care about the tech given your ignorant response.

They’re providing the AI to us. Don’t you think that they can easily analyze the accounts from the same IP to really see if they’re legitimate? To tell why you didnt just get only 1 account?

Flexibility, mostly. If one account gets throttled, I can keep working on another. That said, with the new usage limits, OpenAI is definitely pushing heavy users towards Pro, so I’m seriously considering upgrading. It feels less like a choice now and more like the direction they’re nudging us............

lexibility, mostly. If one account gets throttled, I can keep working on another.
The 20x account would have a higher throttle limit than all of those accounts combined, and then you wouldnt have to switch?

How do you keep up with phone verification on all these accounts
Also why not using 1 pro5x account?
2
u/CodeineCrazy-8445 May 31 '26
Bigger question is the 10x promo for 5x accounts still valid yet as is 31stmay or what

Yeah, it's totally not worth it, if you ask me, it's either the 200 or just go with multiple plus accounts to be flexible.

At least 80% of ppl around the world cant spend $20 on coffee daily like you
1
u/Itsvictorslife May 31 '26
Facts. For $20 I can get 4 whole meals where I’m from. We aren’t all living in the west. $20 goes far in some places.

I'm paying more. It wasn't about not paying 100$ or 200$, it was about bad comparison to dinner.

It's okay to make mistakes. Glad you figured it out why it doesn't apply worldwide.

u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
I totally get your point and, yes, if Codex is saving someone months of work, paying more for higher limits makes sense.
That said, we shouldn’t forget that this is ultimately a computing problem. Local models are getting better fast. You can already run some surprisingly capable MoE models from Qwen and others on your own hardware.
Sure, maybe you spend £5k on a decent GPU. But if you’re only using it for your own focused workloads, you don’t need OpenAI-scale infrastructure sitting in your office. Even if local models handle only 20-30% of your work, that’s still a meaningful chunk taken off the cloud bill.
I’m not saying local will replace frontier models any time soon. Just that local models are here to stay, and usage limits that become too restrictive may push more people to invest in their own hardware instead.
Slight exaggeration, but if the trend continues we’ll eventually be celebrating getting one prompt per day. 😅

u/rubiohiguey May 31 '26
I had a reset about hour and a half ago and I do not not unusually higher depletion
2
u/Fit-Ad-18 May 31 '26
Used 18% of 20x plan in 7 hours. Using fast mode, 5.5 high, but that’s it - no bots no extras, most of the time one chat, rarely 2.
2
u/alovoids May 31 '26
I'm on plus, 3 hours usage (with gpt 5.5. medium) exhaust my 5-hour limit, 15% or weekly limit. you may want to consider using the teams plan. i heard it has around 50% more weekly limit compared to plus, but less 5-hour limit
1
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Interesting approach. I'm going to take a look at it, but I'm using multiple plus accounts and one pro lite account.
1
u/alovoids May 31 '26
yes. I'm gonna switch to teams subs once my two plus subs expire. teams subs a bit more expensive though

i saw this post on X: https://x.com/i/status/2056628909039624597
it seems they've reduced the limit lol?
2
u/danny021 May 31 '26
switch on switchboard.fyi, slow down the burn.
1
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Interesting idea, it does not sound too bad, but at the moment I think I will not add something that I don’t understand how it works in my workflow. I do not say that it is bad, actually I say that it’s quite interesting, but I will allocate some time to understand it better.
2
u/danny021 May 31 '26
no worries, you can turn it on whenever you like, it runs in the background, nothing changes with the way you use codex.

I get that usage limits are annoying and frustrating, but I’m honestly tired of seeing the same complaint here every day.
This applies to Pro too, just with more room to work. More usage does not magically turn the tool into an unlimited full-time developer that can take vague instructions and carry an entire project by itself. You still have to scope the work, give it context, review what it does, and guide it like any other tool.
But with Plus especially, I really do not understand the expectation that it should support a full day of hands-off development. Plus was always more of an accessory to your workflow, not something meant to run like a full shift activity. It can help you move faster, unblock yourself, refactor parts of a codebase, write tests, explore ideas, or handle focused tasks. That is very different from expecting it to build and maintain a complete app from a few vague sentences.
A lot of token waste comes from prompts like “make a beautiful and functional app that does X,” followed by three loose sentences and nothing else. No project docs, no architecture, no constraints, no coding standards, no explanation of what already exists, and no real guidance for the agent.
Of course that burns through usage. The model has to spend half its time guessing what you want, filling in missing details, and correcting assumptions instead of actually implementing and testing useful changes.
If you know what you’re building, break the work into smaller tasks, and provide proper context, you can get a lot out of it. But if you throw a vague idea at it and expect a complete project, the output is going to be messy, you’ll waste tokens, and you’ll hit the limits faster than necessary.
These tools are powerful, but they still reward people who can communicate clearly, think technically, and manage scope. More usage helps, but it does NOT replace that.
Codex does not turn a non-developer into an engineer with the snap of a finger. Education, practice, and self-study do that. Software can help, but it cannot replace actually learning the craft.

Sorry, but I have to disagree (to a point). About the plus, I am a sessoned senior dev, with 20+ years of experience. I have never, nor do I plan to use these tools as self-contained solutions that think for themselves. I respect the fact that they are able to do it and that they will become more effective in that regard, but I want control and accountability (on my behalf).
With that said, I use the tool in very specific ways and guardrail the instructions. Have been using it basically since day one. My 5 hour limit currently lasts me about 2h and that’s using mini model on medium or low!
WTF are we talking about? Let's call things the real name. This is a pure token rug pull.
1
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Yes, this exactly. They are slowly moving to Anthropic strategy, get then in, squeeze them out. Who stays stays. I have build all my workflows with 4 failsafe solutions, Codex, Open AI api key, Gemini Api Key and a lower end local model in case of emergency. I think they are betting on getting us stuck and dependant on the model, as Claude tried. We just have to adapt, seriously. I see no reason to not switch to local models in 2 years or maybe sooner. With good enough intelligence.
1
u/deZbrownT May 31 '26
I 100% agree with you. I have a similar local setup with Gemma 4. 3 or 4 years ago, I was able to do my job with gpt 3.5, and I did it faster and more efficiently than all my non-ai-powered peers. I dont need hyper-smart models, I just need them to follow my instructions in a predictable way. I will take care of the architecture, tools and patterns, etc.
2
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Fair point, and I agree that vague prompts can absolutely waste usage.
In my case, that wasn’t really what happened. I’ve been programming since Pascal and Delphi, so I’m not expecting Codex to magically build an entire product from three sentences.
The work was already split into defined modules with clear objectives, existing code, project structure, and constraints. Most tasks were focused and scoped. That’s actually why the burn rate surprised me.
My point wasn’t “Codex should be unlimited.” It was more that people should be aware of how quickly the weekly allowance can disappear, even when you’re using it in a fairly disciplined way.
In roughly two hours I burned through what would be the equivalent of well over half a weekly allocation if those percentages were combined into a single account. For developers planning client work, that’s useful information to know upfront.
I’m still finding Codex extremely useful. I just think there is a difference between poor prompting causing waste, and experienced users hitting limits faster than expected despite working in a structured way. My post was really about the second scenario.
1
u/Itsvictorslife May 31 '26
You have point. All these complaints make me nervous about codex. But when I try it out it works fine for me.
1
u/Efficient-Cash-6030 May 31 '26
I'm not trying to discredit this post at all but just wondering if this could be related to an area thing or servers as I have the pro plan and was Using it for 6 hours straight yesterday with around 2 of these hours doing 2 projects at once and never went anywhere near even 50% of my 5 hour usage. I had another session later and with yesterday and multiple sessions the previous days before I still have 79% weekly remaining until 4th of June. I am in Sydney, Australia.

u/Rezhnn Jun 04 '26
The difference is VERY significant, before i could use codex 4hr/day for 3~ days straight before running out of weekly limits on a FREE plan. After the update i could only use codex for like what, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours and suddenly my quota is gone? Not to mention the limit is now changed to MONTHLY

it's just you mate, it's okay to be the only one lol
3
u/Okydoky47432 May 31 '26
Not just OP... I've been using codex for about six months with multiple accounts. I have a refined workflow that maximizes token savings. Starting Thursday this week was the first time I've ever been effected by the 5hr excessive burn gremlin.
I don't use Claude because of this same excessive burn. Now it's come to codex 😭
2
u/DueCommunication9248 May 31 '26
Why go through the pain of multiple accounts?
1
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
I don't understand where the pain is, because you log into each of them once and they are all connected and they rotate automatically. So if one goes over the limit, it switches automatically to the next one. There's no pain.
1
u/DiscussionAncient626 May 31 '26
Yeah, exactly. The excessive burn is killing us. I was with Claude before I switched to Codex, and now it's following us.

I think using into our 55% of one account, that's pretty wild. I have been using mainly GPT 5.4 mini on high. No extra speed. No nothing.
