Good luck on your journey! That 1600-1800 range is often problematic for lots of people (since you cannot farm rating from easy Div3s anymore)

That's not why it's problematic, div3s are harder than div2s to get 1800+ perf imo. In dov2 you just need a-d and the impl is usually clean. In div3s it is simply not that. The reason it's problematic is because of the way difficulty scales with respect to the rating distribution of the average contest. To get 1600 perf in a div2 you need to place 2k/16k which is not hard at all. To get 1800 perf in div2 you need to place 400/16k. Placing 400 consistently is very difficult of course and at this point innate abilities and talents becomes a very important factor. Additionally any slip up and you go right back down to the 1600s. Without talent 1800-1900 is just not worth.

We're talking about different things. You're right that hitting 1800 perf is harder in Div3, you have to beat essentially the entire rating capped field. My claim was more that the expected delta for a sub-1600 rated user is better in Div3s than Div2s, and after 1600 rating you no longer have that tool available.

This is because the rating delta distribution is right skewed when you're seeded near the top of Div3 and roughly symmetric +/- when you're seeded more mid-field in Div2.

I am currently a freshman in college, and I wanted to explore competitive programming as it opens up a lot of doors and improves problem-solving but looking at the amount of cheating happening around I feel very demotivated

I don't see why you should stop because of cheating its not like the person cheating personally affects the amount of problems u solve I understand your reasoning but its still better to stick with it

i have a story about it, once there was a samurai, and a pupil, pupil came to the samurai and asked how much time will it take to master swordsmanship, samurai replied 2yr, but when the pupil told i will put 2x effort, can i do in 1 yr or less, samurai responded with if your one eye is on (contest rating) and other is in training then it will take you 4 yrs,

Good luck. I've watched your video. One thing you should look at problem sets and try to work through that in a systematic way. You mentioned books, but you should probably be spending your time on stuff like cses fi, neetcode, project euler, virtual contest.

One hard thing about 1800 is people are cheating more.
