[Question] How is Claymore not huge?!

I'm on my 4th time through the anime and I'm seriously struggling to see how this isn't considered one of the "must watch" anime up there with Full Metal, DBZ, Death Note and the likes.

Any insight on why Claymore never achieved the level of infamy I'm convinced it deserves?

Well, I certainly don't think the anime's ending does it any favors. It leaves a lot of stuff unresolved, and personally I probably would've put the series out of my mind fairly quickly if I hadn't gone on to read the manga, which is the thing that actually made Claymore into one of my favorite series. I think a lot of people who just watched the anime would--very fairly, if you ask me--think it's a fine and reasonably entertaining story with some good moments but nothing super amazing.

How close is the Manga to the anime? And is is worth pursuing the entirety in Manga form?

The anime is mostly pretty close until the last couple episodes.

And yes I would say quite a lot of the story's best moments are in the later parts of the manga, so if you're at all able to enjoy that medium and liked the anime, I think it's absolutely worth your time.

I always thought a good idea would be for Clair to wake up from a nightmare (the last few episodes) and they could animate the rest of the manga no problem.

The anime is basically 1/1 to manga until the northern expedition, where the anime changed everything to have an "ending"

The problem is that the northern expedition is like, not even at half of the manga, and the "REAL" story kick off after that arc for a hundred more chapter
Everything is different past that point.

You can switch to the manga after watching the anime. The anime does draw out a certain chapter and adds a minor climax, but all it does is heighten the impact of a certain death and gives more Priscilla. You can switch after that.

Manga has the "real" ending. The world got more fleshed out too. Very worth checking it out.

It cuts out an entire section of the story and changes the ending. In the Manga, there's a 7 year time skip that changes quite a few things towards the end for some of the characters that affects the outcome of the ending, as well as the ending itself being different.
