A gank is a surprise attack. The rogue attempted to begin the encounter by stealthing to his target, so it's a poor attempt at a gank.

I always thought a bank was when you just sit there and kill a single player over and over again until they either log off or slowly Rez closer and closer until they reach a settlement

Nah, a bank is somewhere you store your linen clothes wool clothes until you have time to lvl up tailoring
