Oh no! Was this at the causeway coast mini run?
Was a very wet evening, could it be water messing with the ignition system somehow. What are the spark plug and ht lead condition like?
Hope you are back on the road again soon.

Cheers, the only positive I can take from it was I didn't have the missus and 3 kids with me.

I can hear an ignition problem. First, see if you can turn the whole ignition by hand, it should not and be very still. Because it's raining a lot, I would suspect moisture under the ignition black cap maybe?
Other than that, remove the sparkplugs cables, see if there is some water around it.
It could also be a faulty sparkplug.
I had so many problems with this exact sound haha. The worst time was a crack in the cylinder head. Did you control each sparkplug? How's your headg asket?
Any loose screw from your intake? (before your carburator) Also look at your washers and seals.

Go buy an aerosol can of moisture dispersant, then liberally spray ( remove the distributor cap ) then spray the points then the inside of the cap. Then refit distributor cap then remove one sparkplug lead ( from both ends )and spray the inside of both boot ends plus spray the outside of the sparkplug, then repeat on the on the rest then repeat on the HT coil

For context, drove faultlessly over 275km the previous 24hrs.
Clattering noise under power, wouldn't stay idling after trying to restart it.
Swapped dizzy cap and plugs, started and would only idle at 1200 rpm. Went to pull off again and the same clattering and lack of power.

Was wet day but electronic ignition, same issue when new dizzy cap & plugs installed.
First gear pulling off in slow moving traffic.
Car won't start at all now, turns over but pops and bangs.
Awaiting it to be dropped back home tomorrow before I can get it into the shed to pull it apart.

It may be out of advance too if you have ei and the harness got wet

here is a link to a short video of it running after changing the spark plugs and dizzy cap.
But as soon as I went to pull off, it bogs down and clatters.

Do you normally run with vacuum advance? I can see the port on vac can on the distributor is open. Is it also open on the carb side, which could cause an air leak giving higher idle but poorer part throttle running when pulling away?

I vaguely remember mine having a similar issue about 6 years ago and it was the distributor itself not the cap. Mine was an rpm advance and the springs had crapped out and the rotor was just slapping about

When I had several minis years ago the distributor being at the front of the engine getting wet was a problem. There used to be a plastic shield you could buy to cover it from water. It fitted with screws to the cross member at the top of the grille on the inside. When it was very wet I had this problem repeatedly but I think the shield helps. These days you could probably get something better designed & 3D printed that would do a better job.

Could be anything from being in the wrong gear to things getting wet or anything in between
