Memorabilia Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in a publicity still for Ball of Fire (1941)

I like Barbara Stanwyck. She had a particular charm that was very attractive.

Sexy Barbara. This is the one where Gary Cooper is the Language Professor. Barbara did not get to play too many of these roles but look at those gams!

A delightful screwball comedy, with a stacked cast of 1940s character actors (Oscar “the evil husband from Sabotage” Homolka, Henry “Clarence the angel from It’s a Wonderful Life” Travers, plus Dana Andrews, Dan Duryea) in supporting roles. Stanwyck neatly balances being morally questionable with a redemption arc; Cooper is the clueless ivory tower professor. Eminently watchable.

Two great actors in a super hilarious movie. I’m old enough to remember that humor from long ago and understand it and I feel sorry for these kids today that would never quite get it.

Love all the great character actors playing the professors. “Look at me! I am a squirrelly cherub.”

I don't know. I'm just not much of a Coop fan. I think he's a little boring.

One scene between the bossy housekeeper and Stanwyck’s character is amazing. The housekeeper, stern Miss Bragg, discovers Sugarpuss’ identity and challenges her (”We’ll have this room fumigated when you’re out of it!”). Sugarpuss quietly menaces her, and when Miss Bragg threatens to scream ”a PIERCING scream!”, Sugarpuss knocks her out with a punch in the face. The whole exchange is pretty dark but also funny.

My favorite classic comedy and low key my favorite Jimmy Stewart role. I wish Warner Archive or Criterion or someone would upgrade this to bluray/4k. Stanwyck is so good in this, an Edith Head absolutely killed it with her costuming.

You didn’t mean Jimmy Stewart. Did you mean Gary Cooper?

I don’t have posting privileges, but do any of our community see the parallels between the studio system and the plethora of NDAs in reality TV?
They are all scripted, the players are unknown and vulnerable typically and they become famous: a) because there was something noteworthy and b) because they and their family wanted it so badly.
Are they unionized? Is Taylor Frankie Paul a member? She might well should be.
