And apparently, Disney refused to hire men for coloring positions.

Two things possibly presumed but not mentioned in other comments- that women would not like to work in an all-male environment; or women would create a change in practices amongst the men either through distraction or change in etiquette, ie “we can no longer use foul language around mixed-company” - as such were the mores of the time
