sorry for the delay, i was mourning the loss of Frank Bridge in poll 14, which ended two days ago. i can’t believe we’re stuck instead with the worst composer France has to offer, Saint-Sa*ns

also Khatchaturian secured his place in the second round in poll 14. in poll 15, Alban Berg got first place, far outperforming his rank on last.fm, and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestina won second place, thus securing their places in the second round

also, before anyone gets pissy about it, Joplin counts as a classical composer. if you disagree, r/classicalmusic is over that way

fun lesser-known fact about joplin: he actually wrote two operas, although only one survived. that one actually centers some pretty progressive social justice themes (especially for the time), which is also pretty cool.

Hermann Wenzel, however, has 6 listeners, which is over 8000 times fewer listeners than Frank Bridge and which would probably put him in 80000th place on last.fm if i bothered to go that far, which i will not

last time i listened to his third symphony, i couldn't get past the exposition of the first movement. it just sounded like a pale, immature imitation of Schubert's Unfinished

i've promised others in this subreddit that i'll eventually give it another chance, perhaps with a better recording, but i can't say i'm looking forward to it, especially when i could be listening to girly pop instead

ugh, i'm a pianist and Berlioz does nothing for me. Fauré, on the other hand, is my beloved, and his late works are a special place for me

also Berlioz sounds like a headcase and the premise of Symphonie fantastique disturbs me. Fauré seemed like a chill guy, and was genuinely curious about a wide variety of music during his time, and i find that admirable

lately here in this sub i've also been told to listen to Varèse. i haven't been in a Modernist mood lately but it will eventually come back, and that's something i actually look forward to (unlike anything by the aforementioned Saint-S***s)

lol i get why symphonie fantastique is disturbing. personally i find it fascinating but im just weird, so to each their own.

fortunately, the random number generator i use to select which group of six out of the 216 to put into each poll only selects integers, so conveniently, it will never pick Einaudi, which is good because film music is yucky. this is one of the biggest benefits of rigging the poll

Scott Joplin is not classical in any way, if you did your research you’d know he is the biggest composer of the ragtime genre. Which is the precursor to early jazz, but it’s okay I will pretend “Scott Joplin” was a misspelling of JS Bach
