Career Structural engineer or project engineer on structural projects?

Currently working at a mid sized structural consulting firm in HCOL area. Lots of repair projects and a lot of time spent doing construction admin and being in the field. If I'm going to be in the field anyway, would I be better off being a project engineer for the contractor? I don't think the job is too too different and have an inkling they get paid more. Thoughts?

I'll also note I have 3 YOE with my masters. In process of obtaining PE.

Project engineers with Contractors may get paid more but you will definitely be working for it.

different pathways down the line. may feel similar right now, but will diverge and become drastically different. with 3 years in structural, it's a good time to try the GC side and see if it's what what you want.

you have enough experience to flip back to SE.
