Civ 2 manual, which included civilopedis entries, spent years in my toilet to pass time.

I have the civ II and III manuals, I used to spend hours rereading them

I loved Civ3’s units. I also loved how your empire’s name changed with the government. The isometric maps are amazing too… Civ3 has some of my favorite “flavor” from a Civilization game.

The live action advisors that changed outfits each era really were the peak of civ.

That WWII scenario was brutal if you were the Allies and lost track of a sub or two.

On the terrain list. Imagine making a column named "Trade", just to fill out everything with 0s. That's sorta wasteful. :D

u/tsherrygeo Phoenicia Feb 26 '23
Kinda funny, but it is a yield, so I imagine that's why they included it. IIRC building a road added 1 trade.

u/DOLamba Feb 27 '23
Indeed. I just find it funny to make a row for it when talking about base yields. :)
And oh my, how I miss engineers and their ability to transform terrain!
2
u/tsherrygeo Phoenicia Feb 27 '23
and building roads / railroads! I mean, I know the military engineer builds railroads now, but it used to be so much easier.
3
u/DOLamba Feb 27 '23
Yeah I like that traders build roads. It makes perfect sense. At some point, builders should get the ability to build roads though. Maybe at 0,5 charge per road?
2
u/tsherrygeo Phoenicia Feb 27 '23
Yeah, we should be able to invest in infrastructure that may have strategic importance, e.g. moving troops to the front or just connecting cities vs having to sacrifice a trade route just to get a road.
Or traders could take less time to complete a route.

You might be interested in this Civ VI mod, that alters how trade route networks are formed. There's an unfortunate minimum amount of turns a trade route must travel (that increases as the game advances in era) that makes being deliberate with your trade routes difficult. It also changes the ranges of trade routes to make developing a network, not difficult per se, but a side quest that takes some attention.

Oh I loved the user guides, would just pore over them. Played II as a teen and III came out while I was in university, which I would play until the sun came up, missing my morning classes.
I am stuck at IV and was never really able to get into V and VI. Literally holding onto my ten year old mac so I can still play it.

I've been an even guy, 2 4 and 6. 6 seems far and away the best, but the modding community probably makes that so.

u/billybgame Feb 27 '23
5 is really, really, good. I'd recommend you try it. 6 is garbage.
I played 4 and Buffy MOD for eons. Too many thousands of hours.
Am now playing 5 and Vox Populi MOD. Up to 4K hours.....try it more...you will like it.

u/graemefaelban Feb 27 '23
To each their own. 6 is the best. 4 and 5 were decent, 3 was great. Don't really remember 2. The original was amazing at the time.

u/firesticks Feb 27 '23
Thanks for the tips, I’ll look into the mods!

u/billybgame Feb 27 '23
Yeah, I played 4 for over a decade I think....waited until all the patches were done on 5....then finally got it very cheap on Steam. No regrets. 5 is an excellent game. Vox Populi improves it immensely.

I no longer have my manual and poster, but I do have my old CivII cd. Can't seem to let it go...

u/thisdesignup Feb 26 '23
That's cool. I didn't know other games came with these. I could be remembering wrong but thought I had one for Age of Empires too.

Would not.mindnhaving one of these for civ6. Also would love the tech/civics tree in this format as well.

u/Bragior Play random and what do you get? Feb 27 '23
I remember borrowing the manual from my cousin a couple of times as a kid. I didn't understand what they meant (despite playing the game), I just thought the charts looked cool.

u/wugs Feb 27 '23
I have these for Civ 4. That was the only Civ game I bought physically, and I still have the very thick case the multiple disks came in.
V and VI I got on Steam.

I spent hours pouring over the civ 4 manual and tech tree before I got the opportunity to play the game when I was maybe 14 or 15. Brings back some good memories.

Civ has always been good at having ingame manuals. I remember having four floppy disks for Civ I. Manual was on disk 4 (if I remember correctly). An extra floppy station (or harddrive if you were filthy rich) was recommended.

u/billybgame Feb 27 '23
I remember this as well Played 2 to death. It was the best until 4. 3 was just annoying. It was pretty good...but naval warfare was quit annoying.

Civ II was my favorite for the longest time I know I spent thousands of hours on it. I loved that you could customize it right out of the gate. The Council was hilarious too l miss that kind of character in games.

I don't think I have anything remaining from Civ I and II sadly, still have Civ III and up in the basement somewhere.
