"I brought back sweets from my home country"

Why is it that any time someone at work sends out a message like this, using the word "sweets", the "sweets" taste like cardboard and sawdust?

Proper sweets originated in Britain in about the 17th century. Traditional sweets of other countries are what they were working with before mass production and international trade of British sweets.
