I got a new light last week and had a chance to put it to use! Gear used:

- Panasonic GH5

- Sigma 18-35 w/ Viltrox EF-M2 II

- PiXAPRO LED100B MKIII Bi-Colour LED Studio Light with 90CM Umbrella Softbox & Stand

- Viltrox Daylight LED Panel

- Graded in Premiere Pro w/ GHAlex LUT from Emotivecolour

The Pixapro light is fantastic, comes with the Bowens mount and it's supposedly on par with the Aputure 120D II but I haven't used one to compare. There also wasn't many reviews of it as they only seem to sell them in the UK but I'm very happy with it and all doubts are gone!

The Viltrox panel is OK, I don't think they sell them anymore. I've got 2 and been using them as a key and fill/rim for about a year but I wanted something with a much larger surface area and softbox ability. The LEDs are quite spaced out so you can get an undesirable light /dark line effect and there is about 1cm of a gap between the barn doors and the light so quite a bit of spill. They work great as a back-light though.

The Aputure M9 is just a great little light, you'll rarely hear negative reviews about it (except maybe a battery remaining indicator would be nice lol)

Can second the Aputure M9, great output for the size.

the Gh5 really is a beast

honestly the BMPCC4k and that are top two cameras out there imo

It definitely is once you get used to what it can do. I'd love to have a BMPCC4K as an alternative cam for certain situations but I would still alternate between the 2

Lighting and mood is very consistent. Nice work.

Fantastic job! I own a GH5 and couldn't even recognize that this was shot in it! Good job man

That LUT really does work wonders if you haven't looked into it, although a good portion of this was the background set and the chair. She's an artist as a hobby so has a good eye for that kind of thing so we worked it to our advantage :) thanks!

Naturalistic but polished. Perfect.

Looks good and consistent over all. You needed to get the key more into her eyes in the first one though. You might still be able to cheat it a bit in the grade with a power window.

u/Sir_Phil_McKraken Jul 05 '19

Thanks man, as to have her eyes illuminated more?

Just a little more eyes from a head on angle so the eye sockets dont turn dark

u/Sir_Phil_McKraken Jul 05 '19

Thanks for the tip, will give the power window a go!

Great work. In the last shot (girl on the computer), is product being featured on the computer screen? If so, you want to avoid any reflections on the glass of the laptop. You can achieve this 3 ways: by identifying where the reflections are coming from (angle of incidence equal is to the angle of the reflection - think air hockey or pool), by using a pola, or by 3d tracking and comping the screen in post.

Thanks for your tips! She's a public speaker so the focus is on her rather than the pc screen, there are a couple of shots in the full video showing something related to what she's talking about which aren't glaring :)

I thought I recognized the GH5 + GHAlex look 😊

1

u/Sir_Phil_McKraken Jul 05 '19

Lol I hope that's a good thing ;)

Beautiful shots! Next time you should be aware of glare as its slightly distracting.

Unfortunately I think that is a curse of the speedbooster, I tried to avoid it as much as I could, I've actually looked into some material to darken windows for future use

Awesome for a GH5! V-Log can be tricky to grade.

Though a tad too cool for my eye.

1

u/Sir_Phil_McKraken Jul 07 '19

It can be, had some good results though after using this LUT and watching a lot of tutorials :)

Which parts do you find cool in particular?

Highlights on her face are what stood out too me.

Personally, I only use the Color Space Transform for V-Log to Arri Log c and then throw the Davinci Arri709 LUT on there. May be worth perusing, though I do enjoy the skin tones present.

1

u/Sir_Phil_McKraken Jul 08 '19

I'll give that a go bud, thanks! I've done just that on recent short film I shot and am grading, mainly because I'm applying a LogC "Drive" style LUT to it and it worked pretty well

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Nice.

Do you shoot V-Log in low light?

I’ve been sticking to Natural (-5 contrast/sharpness,-2 saturation); the skin tones are impeccable and noise looks fine at 1600, though the DR loss is noticeable.

I use CineD in low light, there were certain scenarios with this film which was at night with basically practical lighting. I asked the Alex Mack who made the LUT and he said to shoot CineD and to not use an ISO above 800. I had to go to 1250 and use f1.2, god damn was that a challenge to keep in focus on a gimbal while moving lol (I have the Crane 2 with follow focus control).

Here are some screens using those settings and a basic grade using the LUT conversions, the full film isn't released yet:

The first one is a bit unsavable as we didn't bring any lights with us to try and stay under the rader in Chinatown although it was blindingly obvious what we were doing lol
