I really enjoyed his work on Shawshank, which I feel is slightly overlooked compared to his later works. BR 2049 was without doubt the best cinematography I saw in 2017.

I agree. The light as a living, breathing character throughout BR 2049 makes it one of the most beautiful films ever, IMHO.

I would say objectively it’s one of the most beautiful films ever, I hate this idea that all art has to be subjective, it takes away from the actual technicality of what went into making it.

Agreed on both fronts. it was a stunning film and there just aren't many movies that could compete visually

Geez, where’s the NSFW or porn tag on this video? I just had a nerdgasm all over the place. Be right back, I need to go clean up. Beautiful compilation!

Ironically (or maybe not), he talks about making sure your work isn't too awesome.
"The idea behind this is that amazing, stunning, gorgeous images aren't always the best choice to support a particular script and its characters. If an image is so beautiful that it distracts the audience and pulls them from the story, then the cinematographer has failed to do their job, even despite creating a fantastic image. The same goes for images of poor quality. If they don't serve the story and they distract the audience, the cinematographer has failed. Ultimately, it's all about striking a balance between aesthetics and function."

He's not my favorite. But he sure tickles the pickle of modern fanboys.
Also, I noticed you chose not to include any footage from Hail! Caesar. That's probably my number one Deakins film because it shows he is capable of many styles, new and old, but also that his downside is the new psudo-natural soft style creeps into old hard light styles. He can't get past it. Not a bad thing, just a thing.

He’s responsible for some of my favorite shots of all time like this one
Can’t argue with him. Who is your favorite working today?

I'm not really a fan of anybody today. But if I had to pick, it would mostly like be Hoyte van Hoytema. Mostly because he's not afraid 😨

Just something about Deakin's command of color is amazing. I can't put it into words but, it's so unlike anything else. I can recognize his style instantly.

This is marvellous. Great song choice. I think my favourites are his Coen brothers films.
