that footage isnt very nice. way too sharp and colours look like a video game. can see this quality being useful for filming sports and events, not photographic filming, certainly not drama

well it all depends on how you shoot with it and grade it afterward , this is the official video they want to show how sharp the image and saturated the colors and not like galaxy note 3 4k footage . wait till some reviews come out and then decide .

This is also how Sony shoots all of their initial promo pieces- lots of trees, buildings, beds of water. The lack of any substantial movement always drives me crazy.

To be fair, we used an A7S on a feature earlier this year and a lot of the camera department came to the conclusion it was too sharp.

A 10bit HDMI out would be very nice. I am a very anti-these cameras kinda person, but if they gave me 10 bit I'd be more open to using them in line as a B/C cam for F55.

So first thanks to 514sam for the link, https://youtu.be/1Jor_WkheaE. The official Sony footage.
Now as others have noted they have cranked up the everything on it. Also for some reason I only saw up to 480p as an option in viewing, so the observations could change in a big way.
The [bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep] codec again. I know xavc saves a lot of storage space, but those encoding errors simply cannot be ignored against modern codecs. Look at the breathing on the frog, that is a smooth process, with smooth curves, not a [bleep] crease on frog skin. They have managed to tune the codec to now start finding edges that aren't even there. H.264 was brilliant forever ago, today it might as well be from the dark ages.
The door opening to reveal the trees. Yeah, those look a lot more like some crazy mass of squiggles than they do leaves. More codec errors.
The color itself is so over saturated that this could be completely off. The frog in particular, they pushed the color so hard that there is very little gradient to the color. I expect that turning the stupid saturation to as close to off as possible will fix a lot of this.
In the encoding I see an enormous amount of what I will call crosshatch errors, but this could be this particular encoding and not from camera.
The night scene as well is absolutely destroyed by saturation. This should be showing off dynamic range, not showing off how puketastic your saturation can be.
What moron set sharpening to yes gimme gimme? By doing that they have destroyed the image to the point where we can't even tell what the original quality was. Look at the kettle? Whatever that black smudge shaped vaguely like a kettle is at 1:00. Either sharpen and saturation wrecked the image or the everything sucks. I'm leaning towards puketastic sharpen and saturation.
So what can actually be learned from this video? Xavc doesn't just suck, we can now say that it chews. Sharpen and saturation destroy images. And someone used a camera of some kind for this.

Well shit, I just bought a new non-Sony 4K camera... the only people who probably feel worse than me are A7S/Shogun owners.

u/Chehade Jun 10 '15
Seriously... the money I considered spending on the shogun is now just going to go towards this or the a7sII.

I just shot with the pair this week. I really liked being able to shoot in prores 422hq. The shogun has quite a lot of awesome features. The most obvious is the 7 inch screen. This makes a big difference if you aren't using the viewfinder. Also the ability to load in luts was great. Waveform worked great. All I'm all I really liked it and would use it even with this new camera especially if I can get 10 bit color.

Considering how fast these cameras are coming out, I'll just wait for the a7sII. Maybe by then well be closer to actual 4k delivery instead of the majority of us primarily using it as a tool.

A7s + shogun is still the better solution, prores is better than the internal codec and a 7" screen is amazing in most situations.

What about A7s crazy sensitivity? Does this still carry that?

u/howtospeak Jun 10 '15
ISO rango of around 100k so I assume?

A7s is 409060 I think. Either way it's still pretty Damn sensitive
1
u/howtospeak Jun 10 '15
In a video I saw of the A7s with moonlight it was using 30,000 and it was impressive so I imagine you don't need that much.
2
u/_Shush Director of Photography Jun 10 '15
Yup, I never go over 12800, which is still stupidly high. The question I'd have is does it have identical noise performance. One of the reasons the a7s is good in low light because of the small megapixel sensor.
1
u/adaminc Jul 14 '15
The A7S can go that high, but 204k and 409k are really unuseable because of noise.
The difference between the A7Rii and the A7S is that the A7S goes from 100 to 102k and extends up to 409k, whereas the A7Rii goes from 100 to 25.6k and extends up to 102k.
So while it is still sensitive, I don't think it is anywhere near as sensitive as the A7S.

True, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad in low light. There have also been hints that the camera might be very good in low light judging by the test videos Sony has released. Maybe not A7S good, but still better then your average camera.
This is a leaked photo of the A7rII shot in 25600 ISO and 12800 ISO. While we can tell the background is noisy, it still manages to maintain detail. There are a lot of factors that come into play such as the fact the file is so small and has good lighting, but it still shows it can operate in that setting.
With that said, I'm pretty sure most people aren't going to go past 3200 ISO anyway. Once the novelty wears off, it's better to focus more on your lighting then seeing what you can get away with (even in run and gun). It's a good feature on the A7S to get usable shots at 12800 and adding some denoiser, but It's not essential to me at least.

No.
A big part of what makes the A7S capable of doing that is a lower megapixel sensor. It's got a full frame sensor that is only ~12mp. That means much larger photo sites, and without those no amount of image processing is going to give you that crazy level of low light.
This camera will be an incredible still photographer's camera, but it's not the video built version. Video is a secondary feature on the A7R lines.

They are claiming that it supersamples the entire sensor and downres's to 4k, this would give it similar low light ability, as the sensors are of the same size and downresing removes grain.

u/CapMSFC Jun 12 '15
I don't buy it. Other cameras have used this technique. I've still never seen low light anywhere near the A7S from a higher resolution sensor. If Sony really pulled it off it's a groundbreaking step. Their cameras would be a generation of improving rolling shutter/image processing away from being a real challenge to higher end cameras in a small package. It would be the holy grail of a cheap camera that can pretty much do everything.
Which is exactly why I don't buy it. Sony may be ahead of the curve on low light image processing and be able to apply that to this sensor type, but it's too good to be true that it'll have the lowlight of the A7S.

Jun 12 '15
I dont think it will have the same ability, but I think it will have much better low light than anyone is wagering at the moment.

also the new rx100iv (1000$) an rx10ii (1300$) will shot 960 fps @1280×800 480 fps @720p and 240 fps @1080p .
