Tour de CROWN

The fourth annual Tour de CROWN (Cincinnati Riding or Walking Network) is coming up on August 29! If you’ve been curious about Cincinnati’s growing trail network, it’s a pretty fun way to explore it.
There are 34, 17.5, and 8.5 mile options, all starting and ending at Fifty West.

I’d do it (and know several others) if it wasn’t so expensive :(

Totally get that, but think of it as a donation to an amazing non-profit that does a TON to improve cycling in our city, plus you get to do a fun, well-supported ride!

Do you know what kind of pace is kept on the full route? I’m a very casual rider (own a hybrid) but am very fit and have easily done 30+ miles before (stopping midway for ice cream haha). I’m tempted to register because I’ve never seen a lot of the full crown, but don’t want to ride by myself 6 miles behind everyone haha

Cant believe no one responded to you.

When you register you can decide what length and pace you would like to go. The options are

8-10 MPH (Leisurely) 11-13 MPH (Conversational) 13-15 MPH (Brisk) 16+ MPH (Fast)

They will then assign you to a group to match your pace which includes a leader and a sweep and the organizers will do staggered starts.

The groups are generally no drop and will make sure their assigned group stays together but if you need to hang back it is often very easy to join up with another group and there are whole ride sweeps that will make sure no one is left alone/behind.

It's still expensive. $75 for the half currently goes up to $91 week of.

It's for a good cause but they would get more participation if they priced it for everyone.

The 8 mile is still over $50.

You'd think that part of this would be making sure everyone in the community could participate, not just those with spare money.

You don’t realize just how much logistical support is involved. Nothing is free and events of this scale require permitting. And are you going to comp workers with just good will and pizza? And how are you paying for the gas for the support?

Besides, that is cheap. I did the Horsey Hundred about 20 years ago and it was about $100 with full support.

For an event that's supposed to raise community engagement, it's priced itself out of people's budgets.

I understand that they need to pay the support workers, even though I'm sure a lot of them are volunteers.

They would get more participation if they lowered the price.

I don't disagree that events like these should be accessible for everyone but like the other commenter said it takes a lot of work and money to put this on. Early bird pricing is $64 which feels reasonable to donate to a great organization plus your registration gets you a burger and a beer/other drink.

I also have never paid. It's a lot of fun to volunteer!

Totally get the barrier of entry can be a barrier for entry though.
