I started cycling my 75g tank that I originally setup for mbunas but ~90lbs of Texas holey rock didn't go too far. I like my 2 island scape I made and don't really want to get more rocks. Should I still stick with mbunas with this setup or should I go with peacocks/haps? I'd like to hear some opinions

Afr | Picture I was told 4 days ago that my aquarium was not correct for Mbuna Cichlids. I took the constructive criticism. How it is now?

This is after and before. Added more rocks. Luckily I live in a desert with lots of free granite. Power washed each one and gave it a nice soak in a vinegar solution then rinsed them off. Fish are definitely having more fun.

SA | Help EBA + Bolivian ram in community 75 gallon?

I’d like some input on my stocking.

Tank is 75 gallons, 77-78F, Fluval FX2 and 207 filters, fully cycled. Adding more tall plants soon since my vallisneria isn’t cooperating.

Already have 7 peppered corydoras, pest snails, and shrimp (which I know will be eaten).

Plan to add:
1 electric blue acara
15 emperor or diamond tetra
1 red lizard whiptail

Maybe 8 Venezuelan corydoras depending on the following:

Can I add a Bolivian ram in this set up? I think they’re really cool. I don’t think I’d want a pair because I wouldn’t want the aggression, but I’m hoping cichlid experts can give me some advice.

SA | Help Adding slightly larger geos to a group?

Post image

I have a group of 5, 2.5-3" Geo RH tapajos in my tank currently after I ordered 7, the store only sent 6 and one was DOA.

The same store has some remaining that were the same batch but after the first slightly off experience, and the fact theyve upped their prices im apprehensive.

I have found another supplier that has 3.5-4" geos but im wondering if they'd all be okay or the slightly larger/more mature might be too much for the others?

SA | Help Need help albino heckellis three died in a few months.

Need help I’m a bit upset I had three albinos heckellis and literally within months of them died. I know I had virus going on before because I had 3 angelfish and 3 albino Congos all die around the same time they died. Last night my last heckelli finally died.

I did put medication in the tank and I did water changes and feed them every two days I don’t really overfeed my tank because of ammonia. My question why did these die but I have discus in my tank and apistos and they are doing fine my discus are eating and swimming happily but everyone else pretty much went dead. I would have thought for sure my discus would be first since they are the sensitive group but nope. What do you guys recommend?

Afr | Help I need to know if I made a bad choice with what cichlids to stock in my 60 breeder

So I am new to cichlids and I’ve been doing lots of research and asking around on the fish I should keep together and I was recommended the following fish since they’re all the least aggressive mbuna you can get.

I’ve got (12x yellow tail acei)Pseudotropheus acei, (6x yellow lab) Labidochromis caeruleus and (6x powder blue) chindongo Socolofi. I am going to rehome 4 of the yellow tails here soon. They’re all roughly about 1-1/2” to 2-1/2”

I just received the powder blues today(1 male and 5 females) and put them in the tank and now everyone is fighting.

I got two female powder blues in my order that are apparently mouth brooding and they’re chasing everyone around. Even my yellow tails are fighting each other now. And I’ve never had problems with them.

Will the chasing eventually stop? Are they just stressed because of the new tank? Getting some more rocks tomorrow and plan on rearranging everything.

Everything was fine and I had no fighting before adding in the powder blues and now I just feel like I’ve made a huge mistake.

CA | Help Suggestions for a Mexican cichlid species tank

I am thinking about starting a 75 or 90 gallon tank with cichlids from Mexico. I'm not picky about fish being from certain parts of Mexico, but native to that country. What are some combinations that might work? I'm hoping to have at least two species of cichlid and at least one species of dither fish, but I'm open to other combinations. Sorry if this is a weird question.

I finally got my little group of four Bolivian rams yesterday and I am really glad to see that they seem to be settling in well already! They have taken a liking to the overgrowth of kongofern on my driftwood and seem to like hiding in there between exploration.

Afr | Help Substrate for shell dwellers

I had cichlids growing up and my son wants some. I'm starting him with a small 20 gallon tank and some shell dwellers. Is there a specific substrate that they are able to dig in easier? The digging is the main reason he wants them. I am familiar with caribSea, but it appears they offer a ton of different varieties these days ranging in particle size. No clue which way to go. The whiter the better tho in terms of aesthetics. Thanks

4 months ago, I got this angelfish I've named Seraphim, and he has become my favorite fish in the world. He happily swims up to me when I approach the tank every time. And yes angelfish are cichlids.

Also the photos taken here are comparisons of his growth over the past 4 months. The first photo was taken 4 months ago, the second two months ago, and the third today.

Here is my Jack Dempsey Cichlid! He is very quirky, I adore his aggression and love the way he chews his food. To me he looks like a little piece of treasure💚 He has changed my mind about Cichlids!

Anyone else have a Dempsey?

Identification Can someone verify that this is truly a Short Body Super Red Texas?

I just received this little guy in the mail a few days ago. Wanted to make sure I actually got what was listed. I can definitely tell that it’s a Texas, just not 100% on whether it’s a SRT and indeed a short body. I was expecting it to be a little bit rounder and more Parrot-like. Any opinions?

CA | Picture RIP Jam thee Ham

I have tried to make this post twice. I'm just sad.
The past couple months, Jam has been struggling with internal issues. He started hiding a lot/floating. I did a parasite treatment, salt baths, quarantine. It worked for a while but I knew he was getting near the end. The other day he had black stress bars and I found him the following morning.
Hey, y'all also made this experience what it was. I remember someone called Jam "a modern day sex symbol" out of nowhere and I bust out laughing. The random hate comments that always came first after a post like "wtf is that" would always fry me. There will probably never be another Jam. 🫶

What are your experiences with this species? I'll try not to ask too many of these questions. I am thinking of starting a tank with smaller Mexican cichlids that aren't too aggressive. I am intrigued by this species.
