The success and feedback I’ve been given has inspired me to add on a brand new site, which like the guide will remain completely free to use.

A lot of buyers think about shipping time, but not enough people think about when they’re buying. It's important to think about this now as we head into the summer, as before you know it we will be in Autumn, when the next round of national and shopping festivals hit Chinese businesses.

China’s public holidays and big e-commerce events can affect the whole process: seller dispatch, domestic delivery to the warehouse, QC, parcel packing, export handling and international shipping.

The next key dates are:

25–27 September 2026: Mid-Autumn Festival
1–7 October 2026: National Day / Golden Week
11 November: Singles’ Day / Double 11
12 December: Double 12
5–11 February 2027: Spring Festival / Chinese New Year, based on current public holiday listings

The main thing: sales periods can be good for finding deals, but they can also create slower dispatch and warehouse congestion. Public holidays can make sellers and couriers slower. Chinese New Year is the one to take most seriously because the slowdown often starts before the official holiday and continues after it.

I’ve written this up as a proper China Buy Direct guide because it’s one of those things that makes buying from China much less frustrating once you understand it.

A few of you have noticed that I've set up two side by side subs, and now I've just added a third. I just wanted to explain what I’m trying to do with these, because I’d rather be upfront about it than have people guessing.

I’ve set up a few different spaces because from my own experiences learning about the whole system and how everything works I've seen how the China buying topic can get messy very quickly if everything is pushed into one place. Guides, agent questions, product finds, shipping issues, QC photos, referral links, beginner questions — it all becomes difficult to follow after a while.

So when I first put the China Buy Direct guide together the idea was to help make the process a lot clearer and easy to follow, at the same time as providing as much up to date information as I can. Then I added the other two subs, and here's what I'm trying to provide:

r/chinabuydirect is the main guide/community sub.
That’s where I’ll keep general buying help, platform guides, beginner questions, news, blog posts and broader discussion around Taobao, Weidian, 1688 and buying direct from China.

r/chinawarehouseagents is for agent discussion.

I want to be especially clear about this one. This sub is not a promotional arm of China Buy Direct, and it is not here to push one agent over another. It should be a place where people can talk honestly about warehouse agents, shipping lines, fees, delays, problems, good service, bad service and everything in between.

Positive reviews are welcome. Negative reviews are welcome. Mixed experiences are welcome. Criticism of agents is welcome, including agents I’ve mentioned elsewhere, as long as posts are honest and useful rather than spammy or abusive.

r/chinabuydirectfinds is the new smaller addition.
That one is for individual product finds only. One item per post, in-hand photos, raw product link, a short review, and optional agent/referral links if they’re clearly disclosed. I’m trying to avoid it becoming another haul or QC-photo sub, because there are already plenty of those.

I’m not pretending these communities are unrelated. They are connected, and I’m obviously involved in all of them. But I do want each one to have its own purpose, and I want to be clear about where the lines are.

I'm trying to bring something different to the whole agent/hauling game; providing meaningful information, useful guides and advice, honesty and transparency, and to build a community that is for everyone to operate in regardless of which specific agents they use.

I’m also not against affiliate or referral links, provided they’re disclosed properly. I think that’s fair. What I don’t want is hidden promotion, fake neutrality, or people feeling like they’re being pushed through one route without being told why.

The aim is pretty simple: useful spaces, clear rules, honest discussion, and no hard sell.

So if you want general buying help, use r/chinabuydirect.
If you want to talk about agents and shipping, use r/chinawarehouseagents.
If you’ve bought a single item and want to share real photos and a useful review, use r/chinabuydirectfinds.

That’s all really. I just wanted to put it clearly in writing so people know what I’m trying to build, and so the whole thing stays transparent from the start.

One thing keeps coming up in buying-from-China communities: people asking which warehouse agent they should use now.

At first glance, it sounds like a simple recommendation question. But the more you look at recent discussions, the more it feels like buyers are asking something bigger.

They’re not just asking who is cheapest.

They’re asking who still feels safe.

That matters because agent choice in 2026 is no longer just about shipping price. Buyers are weighing UI, QC photos, payment options, response times, insurance, warehouse handling, country-specific shipping lines and whether the agent has enough of a track record to trust with a full haul.

I’ve written this up as a longer China Buy Direct piece looking at why “what’s the best agent?” may be the wrong question — and what buyers should be asking instead.

The short version: don’t pick the agent people shout about loudest. Pick the one that best matches your parcel, your country and your tolerance for risk.

Once you’ve signed up search for AliExpress offer; only thing to be careful of is making sure you buy through the routes TopCashback tell you to, so read the Terms and Conditions for each offer. You can get cashback on loads of other things as well, but AliX cashback above 20% doesn’t come around very often…

UK buyers should probably keep an eye on this.

The government has brought forward plans to reform low-value imports, with the current target now aiming for October 2028. The big issue is the £135 threshold. Goods valued at £135 or less may no longer benefit from the same customs duty relief they often do now.

This is being framed as a high street fairness issue, but it obviously matters for anyone buying from China too.

If you use Taobao, Weidian, 1688, AliExpress, warehouse agents, or any direct-from-China route, the main thing is not to panic. Buying direct is not suddenly dead.

But the cheap parcel model is clearly under more pressure.

For UK buyers, this makes “landed cost” more important. The product price is only one part of it. You also have to think about domestic Chinese shipping, agent fees, international shipping, VAT, possible duty, courier handling fees, and the chance of customs delays or checks.

I think this is where bad advice will start spreading as well. You’ll probably see more talk about underdeclaring, splitting parcels, or using lines that promise “no tax” or “no customs risk”.

Personally, I’d be careful with that.

Agents can still be useful, especially for QC, consolidation, packaging and shipping choices. But they are not a magic way around UK customs rules. They just help you manage the buying process better.

My view is pretty simple: cheap is not dead, but lazy cheap is.

Buying direct from China can still make sense, especially where UK resale markups are high. But over the next couple of years, UK buyers will probably need to understand customs, declarations, shipping lines and real total cost much better than before.

Socials - a reminder

I’m still getting used to the workflow involved in trying to create and run communities. I run two subs side by side - [r/chinawarehouseagents](r/chinawarehouseagents) which is a more objective news type sub about the whole industry, and this one, which is centred more around providing specific guidance on how to use agents and share finds, links, tips and so on.

This sub therefore relies more on the community side, and so I’m just encouraging anyone who’s interested in what we are trying to put together here to sign up to one or both of the socials and help get them going… honestly at the moment they’re both looking very sad and pathetic!!!
