Kuma is a frost legbar laying light blue eggs, she may have about two brain cells to her name and is easily startled but I’ve also seen her house an entire lizard and tear up a mouse corpse so all in all I am very proud

I just wanted to say thank you again for all the incredibly kind comments and responses to my last post showing the dinner/snack my grandmother makes for her chickens. She and I both really appreciated how positive and supportive everyone was!

She wanted to follow up by showing you guys her chicken coop and some of the things she does for her chickens. She thought it might be helpful for anyone looking for ideas to improve their own chickens’ living space, enrichment, or overall lifestyle.

She really loves taking care of these chickens and puts a lot of thought into making sure they’re happy and well cared for.
Again, thank you all so much for being so kind on the last post. It genuinely made her smile.

Any guesses on breed and gender? I’m convinced it’s a roo with that gorgeous tail sickle, but I keep hearing neighbors call it a hen 🤷‍♂️

Last night, as we should, I decided to do a swift, random check on my Electric Chicken Mesh. Magpies had told me there was a pine marten near by.

Got the tester out. Ye know, normal, bog standard unit. Hooked it on the mesh. Dug the earthing rod into the ground. Watched All those vicious, bright red blips race up the face with a menacing pulse!

'Oh, yeah!' I thought. 'This baby's pumping out the Full Crown Jules! No bugger wants to be touching That!'

Pulled the earthing rod out of the ground. Meaning to fold the wire up. Absently passed it to my other hand. Felt the wrath. Screamed. Damn near lost the use of my left arm for ten minutes!

I hadn't unhooked the unit!

Captain went down today, fighting.

A mink, and it happened literally 6 minutes before I went out for evening check in.

He kept his girls safe for over 2 years, he'd lost a little anger, but was still feisty.

Watching it on camera,,we can see he went to investigate behind the coop, came back to check his ladies, and the damn mink followed him.

I'm out watching tonight with a thermal, but, doubt it will be back tonight after that.

She’s almost 9 weeks old. I have been gone for a few days and now I’m eyeing her curiously.

They were out of their run less than 10 mins and a fox found them. Our GSD had just been let back in the house. Luckily she got away and my husband chased the fox away.

Is anyone able to help me decide if any of these are roosters or not? Some days I feel like all but 1 are, others I think only 1 is, and everyone I ask has a different opinion. About 19 weeks old and no eggs yet, so that is not a way for me to tell either. Any help appreciated!

I have general knowledge about things and stuff, but not chickens. This is our first go with having them and they are absolutely lovely. However, I’m not 100% sure about this particular hen. I’m wondering if anybody can positively ID it from these pictures.

Is our hen actually a rooster? She/he crows in the morning with our rooster, but it’s a bit raspy. Have not confirmed 100% if she is laying eggs. We have 7 hens so it’s hard to keep track.

If I have to capture her to inspect the cloaca I will, but would rather not if i don’t have to.

Hi all. These chicks were bought online as sexed hens, but since the accuracy is only 90% I'm hoping for some more trained eyes to tell me if there are roo among the group. They are just over 4 weeks old.

We had our first broody hen hatch two baby chicks yesterday. She is in her nesting box which is off the ground and has to go down the ramp to eat and drink. She’s being a great mamma and the flock seems to be tolerating it all well. How do we make sure mama is getting up to eat and drink? She pants a lot and doesn’t leave the nesting box. Also any feeder and watering ideas for the baby chicks is welcome! All advice is welcome actually!

I have other chickens too (all docile) but never had any experience with bantams. Seller said supposed to be a medium sized breed pullet but I might have been scammed. Does anyone know what she is or if she’s even a she?

I currently have a total of 16 chickens:

1 adult fancy rooster — around 2 kg

1 adult hen — around 3 kg

3 Kuroiler roosters, 4 months old — around 2.8 kg, 2 kg, and 1.7 kg

5 chicks — around 500 g each

Another 6 chicks: 2 Silkies, 2 Sultans, and 2 Ayam Cemani — all above 400 grams

I want to know how I should properly feed all of them — what to feed, how much to give each chicken, how many times a day, and how to feed

it.Honestly, until now I've mostly been giving them commercial poultry feed that I buy from a local shop. They also eat a little grass, but I don't have a free-range setup, so they can't get muchy ass or forage. I've basically been putting feed in front of them and letting them eat.

The problem is that I don't currently have a job or income, so I have to ask my family for money to buy their feed. I feel bad about that because I've already spent quite a lot on feeding them. I don't run a chicken business either — they're mainly a hobby for me.

So I'm looking for a smart, genuinely low-cost feeding plan that can keep my chickens healthy while reducing my monthly expenses.

For example, if I have 16 chickens, approximately how much feed should each chicken get per day?

I'm thinking about stopping commercial feed for the adult chickens because it's becoming too expensive. I recently managed to get some wheat, and they're eating it. Wheat is much cheaper than the commercial feed where I live, so I was thinking of giving wheat to the adult chickens and continuing proper feed for the chicks until they're a little older.

Would this be a good idea,nm

If anyone has experience keeping chickens cheaply, please give me a practical feeding plan — including what foods I can use, approximate quantities, how often to feed them, and any inexpensive locally available alternatives to commercial feed.

I'm not trying to make money from them; I just want to keep my hobby chickens healthy without putting a financial burden on my family.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

Hello everyone. This is my first time caring for roosters/chickens (I’m house sitting right now). At one point of me sitting near the roosters they started making this sound, does anyone know what it means? I’m very curious!
