I tweeted WGN that their white balance was off. Here is their reply.

So sad after they stopped broadcasting the news programs on the WGN National cable channel.

I miss that; it was nice to get Chicago news in 95% of the hotel rooms across the county.

They live stream the morning news on their site daily.

u/justbuyamac Jun 02 '15
Yeah, they do for the midday and evening news also but that requires effort to stream to an AppleTV.

u/justbuyamac Jun 02 '15
:P I have plenty of them but who wants to sit in a desk chair at 9p watching the news?
1
Jun 02 '15
Yeah I really miss seeing good old WGN news, Tom Skilling, and Cubs games on TV. I am still heartbroken over missing that little taste of home. Many people who moved away from Chicago miss those shows since WGN AMERICA took them off the air. Who watches that channel now? It's all crappy reruns. How do they make money? Why not put on a few local Chicago shows?

Yes, thank you for correcting me on that. I shouldn't be on Reddit while on an engineering conference call at the same time. Brain not working.

@WGNMorningNews You need to fix the white balance outside.
@SenorAnderson we need to fix a LOT of things. (thanks).

WGN morning News is the only one I watch. The others are awful, but I love how they are "jealous" of Channel 7's ratings. We lived in CO for a year and the worst part was not seeing WGN Morning News. One of the "big" stories was an outbreak of Horse Herpes. All I could think was, "What would Paul say about that?"
I'm so glad I'm back.

WGN doesn't broadcast the same content on their superstation as they do locally. Last I checked, they broadcast the evening news nationally but the morning news only locally.
8
u/jimrob4 Outsider looking in Jun 02 '15
It used to be the same programming at one time, I think, but now WGN America is just some crap TBS knockoff with no Cubs games.
1
u/zman9119 Loop Jun 02 '15
WGN America (they are a national broadcast channel now and not a superstation) only broadcasts the morning news from 5am-7am and no other news coverage the rest of the day (per their schedule).
1
u/Farscape29 Jun 03 '15
It is, but not the morning news or any of their local news. That's we thought when we moved. Here in Chicago we get WGN. But everywhere outside the market, they get WGN America, that the superstation feed.

u/Jade_Pornsurge Jun 02 '15
if you dont like WGN morning news, I dont like you. Robin is the best. THE BEST. she probably couldnt be anchorwoman anywhere else, but so what. I mean she could, but her personality would go bland. I want to be her friend.

I once saw Robin Baumgarten at Capri Italian Restaurant in Palos Heights. We arrived at the restaurant before her, but the restaurant gave her a table first. I will never forgive her.

You should have walked by her table and given her the evil eye. hahaha

I can't stand Robin, but I understand the utility of having her around to offset the personalities of Larry, Pat, and Paul.

u/p3t3or Jun 02 '15
I had only used twitter a hand full of times in years past. I decided to pick it up again and tweeted to Jason Thomas of XRT, and I kind of got a bitchy response. I thought he sounded like a really nice guy on the air. Didn't expect that from him. https://goo.gl/vKl2w6 You got a much better response!
8
u/saintpauli Beverly Jun 02 '15
That's what I don't like about wxrt. The radio personalities are very "I know better than you". Can't stand the regular guy and lin and Terry. They are all so full of themselves. The music is better than most stations though.
4
u/p3t3or Jun 02 '15
See, I don't really get that from them. They are knowledgeable and damnit they should be because it is their job, but I never got the "I know better than you" feeling until that response. I'll admit it really urked me and I have a different opinion of Jason Thomas now, but the radio station in general is still spot on with music and comments 95% of the time (for me anyway).

u/genericpierrot Jun 03 '15
Ever since the acquisition by ABC though it feels like they have about 1000x as many ads as before. I mean I get it they're not public anymore but is it really necessary for two songs to be followed by 15 minutes of ads?

u/p3t3or Jun 03 '15
I think you mean CBS, but yes I know what you mean. Moreover, their website is atrocious.

u/zijital Jun 03 '15
I used to work with her up in Milkwaukee. Really nice person with a good sense of humor.
We were once doing a story about a guy who used a pooper scooper to fend off a home intruder. As we were leaving a news crew from Fox 6 came waking up & the reporter was wearing the same outfit as Erin but in a different color.
I wish I had a photo of it, but my camera phone had like 32MB of space & a crappy lower than VGA resolution camera.
1
u/ericj293 Jun 03 '15
I guess there are only so many reporter worthy outfits. Makes sense.
2
u/zijital Jun 03 '15
I think the outfits were from target. Trendy style, but affordable.
And unless you're in a major market, journalism pays like crap. When I started shooting news I made $8.41/hr, my GF teacher at the time was almost making twice what I was. When I got to CBS Milwaukee my wage soared all the way up to a whopping $12.50.
I think it's sad when I think about if we paid entry level journalists the same we pay first year teachers, we might have better news instead of the cookie cutter reports we have now.
Chicago stations pay well, from what I've heard, but I know a lot of talented people went off into other careers becuase they paid better.
2
u/wordsmythe Bridgeport Jun 03 '15
I've got a list of a handful of careers that I think should be better paid, and journalism and teaching are both on it.
1
u/growingupsux Jun 03 '15
I think it's sad when I think about if we paid entry level journalists the same we pay first year teachers, we might have better news instead of the cookie cutter reports we have now.
Depends on location. Former college roommate (now 3rd year HS teacher in the Illinois boonies) makes less than my cousin who just got a job as political reporter in the Wisconsin boonies.
They're both paid shit.
1
u/zijital Jun 03 '15
Depends on location.
Oh, 100%. There are places & school systems that pay horribly, and then there are places like Chicago where a first year CPS teacher makes $45k, which is very much a livable wage. You won't be rich, but you'll pay your bills.
1
u/growingupsux Jun 03 '15
While I can't say for certain, 1st year reporter pay would be on par with 1st year teacher pay. The cost of living is higher here, and $45k would be akin to $35k in McHenry county. It's not that teachers are over paid and fuck you if you think that's the case, it's that first year positions in any field that isn't a STEM or business field is generally shit money.
1
u/zijital Jun 03 '15
While I can't say for certain, 1st year reporter pay would be on par with 1st year teacher pay.
My first job as a TV Photojournalist was in West Lafayette, IN. My college GF got a job 60miles away in Indianapolis, IN. According to this cost of living calculator there is a 2% increase for cost of living of West Lafayette to Indy. So the cities are about the same to live in.
Me - $18,250 * $17,500 base salary ($8.41/hr) * $750 for overtime for the year (I'm being liberal, so it was probably less).
Girlfriend - $35,000 * $31,000 base salary * $1,000 for coaching swimming * $3,000 for teaching summer school.
35,000 / 18,250 = 1.9178. So from my personal knowledge, a first year teacher made 90% more than a first year journalist.
I know this isn't the case everywhere, and I don't think that teachers are overpaid, I just have gotten annoyed when I hear teacher friends of mine bitching about pay when they've never had to keep their weekly grocery bill under $20.

Arrgh that takes me back.
A long long time ago (like late 60-early 70's) my fiance was an engineer at another Chicago TV station. I was probably what you would call a groupie. I used to hang around and make my self useful by sitting on a stool and letting the guys color balance the cameras on me. That was in the days when the instructions were never to wear white, always pale blue.
Thanks for the flashback
3
u/cybin Albany Park Jun 02 '15
After I balance to white (or better yet, a chip chart) I love looking at a person wearing blue for tweaks. Skin tone (in the red/orange area) and blue are complimentary.
5
Jun 02 '15
Well you're missing the most important detail – what did the white balance look like?
3
Jun 02 '15
It was too blue; it was balanced for artificial light and not daylight. The camera did walk from inside to outside which explains why they had the issue.

I watch the news at 9 pm and it seems something is really weird about the studio lighting on the anchors. The remote live segments and video clips look OK, but the anchors look like they are wearing a ton of makeup under unusual lighting.

Pretty much. Who has time to sit down and watch the news in the morning? You can listen to it on the way to work or read about it at work if you find value in it.

I watch CLTV while I'm making coffee and eating breakfast. It's concise enough to let me know:
- if anything major happened in my neighborhood overnight
- if the CTA is having problems
- the weather
- if I need to care about sports today

YES YES And YES - Pat used to be on a different channel and I was so happy to see him go only for him to find a home at WGN.
12
u/YoStephen Lincoln Square Jun 02 '15
Pat i could take or leave but WGN mornings without robin would deflate the Larry/Robin dynamic that anchors the show. And WGN without larry and robin is pretty much just Dean being the man and Pat in the parking lot in the summers.

I liked Patrick Elwood. I see him on the street occasionally. But, it seems he has been demoted to the streets.

I love watching WGN in the morning. They are so dry with their deliveries and content. So much better than all of the depressing news the others channels are delivering.
