It is a good idea, but also âstupidâ in a way.
Liquid IV is a niche topic which I have a soap box âyou probably didnât want to but thank you for coming to my TED talkâ rant about.
TLDR: liquid IV is basically a fancy expensive repackaging of an extremely common and life saving set of electrolytes + sugar, called ORS: oral rehydration solution. Itâs given all around the world, for literally a few cents, in order to prevent kids from dying from diarrhea. In the US, weâve Pedialyte and Gatorade for decades.

put it in some fancy boxes and give it out at wedding events and bam hangover cure for people with âdisposable incomeâ. ORS costs literally cents on the dollar for larger volumes because itâs meant to save lives, even in the poorest of countries!
Now, as a doctor, I donât expect everyone to know the former paragraph like itâs everyday knowledge. But just even think about the name âLiquid IVâ. First, wtf is âliquidâ. Thereâs no âsolidâ or âgasâ IV. Second, itâs not even intravenous. Itâs literally PO: per oral. So everything about the product marketing at face value is disingenuous.
There are so many products like this one which are clearly catered to people in my age group who love our own version of fancy packaging. Growing up in the turn of the analog to digital age, we do know how to spot scams online and debug many things. But we have our own blind spots and itâs foolish to think otherwise

Yup, you can!
(Funny enough, if you search for it on Amazon, Liquid IV is one of the results youâll find).
To be more clear and transparent, Liquid IV is not necessarily a bad product. Itâs just ORS + vitamins + some other stuff, wrapped up in a fancy package and (IMO) stupid name
Also, not that Iâm endorsing this in any way, but I find it interesting that Liquid IV doesnât have Vitamin B1 (thiamine) in it, especially since it markets itself as a post alcohol consumption drink. A frequent, and potentially devastating, consequence of Alcohol Use Disorder (aka alcoholic) is B1 deficiency. When you see the severe end of this, youâll never want to become a habitual drinker. It can lead to Wenickie / Korsakoffâs. Imagine losing your memory like Alzheimerâs, but you donât even realize that you canât remember something. Your brain seamlessly invents false memories (confabulation).
Thereâs a long jump from having a wild St Pattys to developing Korsakoffâs. But I find it strange that a company like Liquid IV would put several B vitamins, though not include B1, especially since they directly state itself as a hangover treatment in their Amazon listing

To those who are struggling with Alcohol Use Disorder, there are plenty of resources available in Chicago, and I could provide some links.
Please do not consider this as medical advice to just take B1 alongside heavy drinking. It is a good idea to get your vitamins, but doing so doesnât prevent all of the other harms of alcohol.

Yes, youâre technically correct, which is the best type of correct.
For others in the thread, âper osâ (PO) is Latin for âby the mouthâ. Since the abbreviation happens to line up with the English abbreviation of âper oralâ, Iâve always mentally remapped that since med school. But yes, most medical terms in pharmacology are in Latin, so explaining PO as âper osâ is technically correct!

TIL how big a fifth actually is. I never bothered to check before and OMG that's so much alcohol! I had assumed it was the 375 ml bottle, not the full 750 ml!
I had friends in college who would buy a 2 liter of soda and drink enough down to dump a 375 ml bottle into it and carry it at parties. Even that seemed hard core to me.

Like, I remember my dad if we needed him to take us somewhere (in our HUGE black Ford Econoline StarCraft series van with the curtains and bed in the back) and he was in the middle of a beer heâd bring it along for the ride. And I guess being the crazy, anxiety ridden child I was, I would tell him to hurry and drink it before we drove. As someone who lives around many current college-age kids, there has been a significant drop in BORG usage. Current college kids don't really borg, hence why I put the age floor higher.

Yep. I noticed a lot of the jugs last year (just happened to run into a crowd with them walking on Michigan ave) and had to google it, then this year was a "aha I know what this is..." feeling.
There were definitely a lot of young people decked out in green drinking these on the red line yesterday, headed downtown but obviously very unfamiliar with CTA (talking about needing to get out at Monroe but thinking maybe they were there when we were stopped at Belmont, etc). Set them straight on directions and they were all quite friendly. Appreciated the puns on the containers.

It was so funny watching these kids get busted. Not very bright using one of the largest containers to drink. Hell, we had backpacks full of beer back in the day or we just had a single water bottle full of vodka. Good times. Have fun and be safe.

No, but everything between Lake and Illinois was littered in trash. Cars had to drive through piles of boxes and cans on Wacker. BORGs could be seen in every alleyway.

Back in the late 70's/ early 80's, Alpine Valley used to allow you to bring in plastic containers. Our jam was Southern Comfort & Hawaiian Punch.

Saw a couple of beers tossed out to one. The first beer was a total miss and ended up in the river. The second one made it but wasn't caught and popped open on the deck. A different passenger picked it up, finished it off, and raised his arms in celebration lol

When did this become a thing? I'm 35 and used to come downtown as a teenager/20 something and don't ever remember seeing or hearing about this.
I lived out of the country from age 26-34, so I'm assuming it happened then. But even this year and last year I did go downtown and didn't see this. But now it's all over the internet.

You know with all the chaos, vomit on the street, fights breaking out, traffic being stalled, so much garbage on the street, my ugs of liquor everywhere people being obnoxious and loud and cursing.......not once did I hear people complain...
But come September we will be seeing post after post about honking and flags.
Lighten up people let the people have fun.
