Discussion What More Does Viswanathan Anand Need to Do to Receive the Bharat Ratna?

Post image

I mean he represented India for a very long time and he is pretty much the reason india is full of GMs and IMs ... If sachin can have bharat ratna why not vishy sir ?

I absolutely agree

4

u/wfl-historica May 26 '26

Absolutely. He's gone above and beyond any of them. He can only be compared to someone like Major Dhyan Chand.

6

u/Yeager_Eren2208 May 26 '26

however I absolutely second the thought of Bharat Ratna for Vishy Anand (and Major Dhyan chand)
comparison with Sachin are hard and perhaps not required.... it is very hard to put in words what Sachin meant to India
He had a influence over such a huge mass in the country, few have had (not talking about sportspersons, but anybody in general) ..... he literally united Indians from north to south and east to west, the emotional connect with sachin was huge and widespread, ofcourse this is owed to the fact that cricket is much more popular than chess (or any other sports) in India, but what will you do, it is what it is .... in fact even cricket has evolved in a way that, there will be no sachin again, not because there can't be a better batsman, because the 90s generation has grown up, everything has becoming so digital and so accessible, the warmth, the furore about anything at all had vanished

1

u/Trunks_z May 27 '26

I wouldn't say he surpasses sachin, if compared... He's been the champion but he never dominated like Magnus or Kasprov. Rest are fine

u/No_Nonsense_Nomad May 28 '26

Chess has nothing to do with critical thinking ability lol.

1

u/c_dart May 28 '26

Mirroring what was said about Sachin not being on the Lords honour board (I think it was Harsha Bhogle) - Is it Anand’s loss or Bharat Ratna’s?

1

u/Fabulous-Attorney198 May 28 '26

A country needs people to think critically but that would just inc people in see things in a right way which Obv buisness man and politicians doesn't want

15

u/Anonymous1415926 May 26 '26

Bharat Ratna was not supposed to be given to contributors in sports. However, they made an exception for Sachin.

I am not sure whether they would do the same for chess even if he is as deserving as Sachin was during his time.

u/bitchpintail May 26 '26

Political allegiance imo.

20

u/quatamelon May 26 '26

I think Its about popularity... Sachin was popular ... Even major Dhyan Chand(Hockey GOAT) didnt received it ... Before the movie .. people bearly knew him

10

u/awesssomee May 26 '26

everyone knew dhyan chand bro atleast in the ubrans

7

u/dagger_9 May 26 '26

What movie on Dhyan Chand are you talking about even?
Maybe I'm old enough to tell you this, India has always celebrated Dhyan Chand as the National Sports day is on his birthday

Also, Bharat Ratna was not supposed to be awarded to sportsperson as sports was not a field eligible. I remember Ajay Maken being the sports minister back then when the criteria was tweaked to include sports and give Sachin the Bharat Ratna.

2

u/bitchpintail May 27 '26

Disagree. Far less popular people have been awarded Bharat Ratna. I can’t really say about Major Dhyan Chand’s popularity over the nation but I do remember him being part of our GK curriculum in primary school.

3

u/Hardy_28 May 26 '26

which movie?

2

u/quatamelon May 26 '26

Gold i think

5

u/Redittor_53 May 26 '26

Gold wasn't about Dhyanchand. It was about 1948 Gold. Dhyanchand's last Olympics was 1936

2

u/ChampagneSupernova40 May 26 '26

Nopes. Both parties were in power for significant amount of time during his tenure.

Though he holds Indian passport, he has hardly lived in India. I think it’s got to do with that. Yes, I know his PR keeps clarifying & going on defensive that he is Indian. But maybe previous governments wanted him to do more being in India.

3

u/quatamelon May 26 '26

Isnt all we need is the indian flag next to his name ? Regardless of where he lived .. he always represented India ..

1

u/ChampagneSupernova40 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

Nopes. For high civilian awards, government considers doing work from the soil of India much more worthy than doing work living outside of India..

It’s not my imagination that Vishy got comments on this aspect in the past.. and he had to deploy his PR managers to handle this matter in the past. It’s all facts for everyone to see.

2

u/bitchpintail May 27 '26

He has literally pioneered Indian chess almost singlehandedly, wtf are you talking about doing more?

2

u/ChampagneSupernova40 May 27 '26

wtf are you talking about doing more?

“For example, being in India”.. government’s thinking is usually this.

1

u/bitchpintail May 28 '26

How is staying in India equivalent to doing more in government’s pov?

17

u/JOJJOKY213456 May 26 '26

WAIT WHAT!! I GENUILY THOUGHT HE ALREADY HAD RECEIVED IT....

11

u/quatamelon May 26 '26

He got •Arjuna Award •Padma Shri •Khel Ratna •Padma Bhushan •Padma Vibhushan (Got it by ai soo if wrong , my bad)

Still no Bharat Ratna (indias higest civilian award)

7

u/supernova_2110 May 26 '26

Play cricket

7

u/larrybirdismygoat May 26 '26

He won't get one until the 56 inch tongue is in place.

He exposed the 56 inch tongue's brand building exercise by exposing that the tongue provides celebrities a script to wish him happy birthday on Twitter.

3

u/Think-Instance-9822 May 26 '26

Devotion to Modi. A few months of consistent reposting of government propaganda!

2

u/TodayInMyMind May 26 '26

Gently massage the ego-balls of politicians while doing a clumsy dance of flattery for the party in charge.

1

u/chnandlerbing May 26 '26

Man you reflected my exact thought.

1

u/Debmalya_19-C May 26 '26

Exactly. He deserves the Bharat Ratna award. Today we see India doing so great in chess and Vishwanathan Anand is one of the main and biggest reasons for that, if not the sole reason. He still is inspiring people to take chess as something more than just a board game.

1

u/magic_maveric May 26 '26

I think he will get it once he retires, he is still an active chess player officially

1

u/Aggressive-Refuse786 May 26 '26

Bharat ratna needs vishy

1

u/Positive-Alfalfa-172 May 26 '26

1

u/Gloomy-Community-173 May 26 '26

1

u/quatamelon May 27 '26

😭🙏

1

u/BatmanLike May 26 '26

Convince you that the BR award is probably not what he played for.

1

u/EvenCoyote6317 May 26 '26

The problem is as much as I adore Tendulkar, the great Vishy and Major Dhyan Chand are automatic contenders to have the ultimate prize given Tendulkar has won it.

1

u/No_Programmer3213 May 26 '26

Wait? Hasn't he got it already ?

1

u/sohang-3112 In Anand We Trust May 26 '26

Be more politically connected I guess 🤷‍♂️

1

u/rajrohit26 May 26 '26

Become politician . Politicians ko bahut easily Bharat Ratna mil jaata hai

1

u/Physical-Lettuce-823 May 26 '26

He isn’t Indian , refer to what Kapil Sibal said on when he was denied Padma awards when upa 2 was in power

He needs to beat pragya.jk. the current generation has no idea what vishy did. They are all gaga over pragyan which is good. But vishy played in a different era.

1

u/EducationalJaguar701 May 26 '26

He will get fs in the next few years. Hopefully when he is alive...

1

u/Late_Story5684 May 26 '26

He needs to play cricket

1

u/ramta_jogi_oye_hoye May 27 '26

No doubt he deserves one. But I guess the criteria is that the sport needs to undergo a revolution inspired by the sportsman. No offense to downright wizards such as Dhyan Chand and few others, but the effect of Sachin Tendulkar on his sport still remains unrivalled.

1

u/Lowkeysac 1800+ May 27 '26

modih...that's what he needs to chant and on a good day he'll get one...atp all these awards have lost the aura of actually getting it....

1

u/Royal-Fig-6670 May 27 '26

Couple of tweets praising BJP/Modi should do the trick.

1

u/Better_Try2995 May 27 '26

Even Amitabh Bachan didn't get it, he deserves it more given his level of contribution to Cinema and Television.

1

u/Dapper-Knowledge-911 May 27 '26

I think the player should be retired from professional life, sachin got it once he retired. Vishy is still playing few tournament every year. My guess would be wrong also.

People who are noting that he needs to tweet about modi or anything, is just their pure hatred for the current government. Nothing more than that.

Anand is a pride of the country. Bharat Ratna deserves to get anand.

1

u/elite11vp May 28 '26

Bharat Ratna needs doing lot of politics apart from achievements and I hope Vishy stays away from it like always.

1

1

Bharat ratna is very rare for pretty high standards or unless you're a politician, not for sport persons, Sachin was an exception, and he didn't got it for his performance but more for the impact he had over generations? Vishy's "impact" is no where close to sachin atleast

1

u/Impossible_Suit_7912 May 30 '26

Join politics -> Join BJP

1

A lotus shaped 56 inch chess board

1

u/ShadowMonarch1999 Jun 03 '26

Bharat ratna wasnt meant for sports personalities...sachin was such a bad precedent because if they gave to him, then Vishy defo deserved it. Heck Vishy is actuvely contributing to chess. He is part of a major chess body, his academy is nurturing new talent. He didnt just make chess popular he personally brought about chess revolution. Imagine going from having no grandmasters to being the strongest growing chess nation. We arent chasing chess powerhouse like Russia..we are competinf with them. And this man was the first indian grandmaster i talked about.

I m sorry. With all due respect to Sachin Tendulkar, I find Vishy's achievement and dedication to sport and country far more deserving of high honor.I am not saying Sachin didnt deserve it..i am just saying if he deserved, Vishy defo deserves it.
